2) FIRST TUESDAYS – TIPS AND TRICKS WITH THE U.S. CENSUS

The U.S. Census contains valuable information that can be extremely useful to our patrons, but trying to find it can be challenging. Some of the most recent releases include new content that may be unfamiliar even to those who are skilled in the use of census data.

Census is the topic for the February 7, 2012, First Tuesdays program from the Washington State Library. Linda Clark of the U.S. Census Bureau will discuss what is new and different about the materials contained in the latest releases from the 2010 Census and will show you tips and tricks for finding the information your patrons need.

Designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, First Tuesdays is a free, online, monthly presentation from the Washington State Library, held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. usually on the first Tuesday of each month. To join the presentation, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays.

4) WILL YOUR WEBSITE MEET THE NEW ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS?

Library websites are about to become subject to new accessibility legislation. Is yours ready? If you have no idea where to begin, this webinar can give you a firm grasp on the basics of preventing legal violations. We’ll look at what it takes to make a website meet accessibility standards. Web accessibility is about a lot more than just using an “alt” tag. This is more than an overview – we’re going to be getting dirty with actual code. Please note: Attendees will need at least a basic understanding of HTML and/or XHTML to get the most from this session.

Those joining the webinar will be able to:

  • Define web accessibility;
  • Explain the major differences between Section 508 and WCAG/WAI;
  • List at least five major changes to site code that have to be made to meet current standards;
  • Use at least one online accessibility validator.

Webinar information:

  • When: Thursday, February 9, 2012, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PST;
  • Registration cost: Registration is free for OLC (Ohio Library Council) Individual Members and staff of OLC member public libraries; $25.00 for non-members.

For additional information and to register, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/OCLCADA.
