2) FINDING FUNDING FOR PRESERVATION
Creating and Funding Preservation Projects to Enhance Collection Care is a free one-day workshop from the Western States & Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS) that begins by identifying and prioritizing collection needs, followed by reviewing sources of available grant funding. The workshop emphasizes working collaboratively with colleagues to develop and receive feedback on project proposals.
Workshop information:

3) DOES YOUR LIBRARY DESERVE A MEDAL?
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is now accepting nominations for the 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for libraries and museums. The award recognizes outstanding institutions that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities by:
- Demonstrating extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service;
- Exceeding the expected levels of community outreach;
- Establishing themselves as community anchor institutions.
All types of nonprofit libraries, including public, school, academic, research, and archival, are eligible to receive this honor.

4) NEW GRANT SUBCATEGORY FROM NEH
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Preservation and Access supports projects that provide an essential underpinning for scholarship, education, and public programming in the humanities. Cultural heritage institutions, including libraries, that maintain important collections such as books and manuscripts, photographs, sound recordings and moving images, and digital objects, have received funding from the Humanities Collections and Reference Resources program to help extend the life of their humanities collections and to make their intellectual content widely accessible.
This year, the program includes a new grant subcategory, Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Foundations grants, which support the formative stages of planning, assessment, and pilot activities for initiatives to preserve and create access to humanities collections or to produce reference resources. Examples of projects within this new subcategory include:
- Planning strategies to establish intellectual control of collections;
- Developing plans and priorities for digitizing collections;
- Solidifying collaborative frameworks and strategic plans for complex digital reference resources;
- Producing preliminary versions of online collections or resources.
Applications must be received by Thursday, July 19, 2012. For addition information, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/NEHFdn.

5) CIVIL WAR 150 PUBLIC PROGRAMMING GRANTS
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, in partnership with The Library of America, is now accepting applications from libraries and National Park historic sites for grants to develop public programming around the free traveling panel exhibition “Civil War 150.” The exhibition is part of Civil War 150: Exploring the War and Its Meaning through the Words of Those Who Lived It, a major three-year project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The project is centered on the four-volume Library of America series, The Civil War Told by Those Who Lived It, and includes a collection of readers (discussion guides) drawn from the series.
Fifty sites selected by competitive application to host the exhibition will each be awarded a grant of $1,000 to plan accompanying public programming. The exhibition is available for three-week periods from October 2012 to March 2015. Hosting sites will also receive supporting interpretive and contextual materials, including the “Civil War 150” readers and access to a multimedia website with robust digital resources. Public, academic, and special libraries are invited to submit applications for the public programming grants and exhibition. Applications must be received no later than Sunday, July 15, 2012. For additional information and to apply, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/CW150.
