1) 2013 OFF THE PAGE RENEWAL
For most libraries participating in the statewide contract with Recorded Books and OneClickdigital, which is part of the “Off the Page: Downloadable Audiobooks and eBooks for Washington” project, the 2013 renewal went into effect on April 1. While Recorded Books did not raise prices for public or academic libraries, invoices reflect a decrease in WSL LSTA subsidies from 50% to 40%. Prices for K-12 school libraries were increased by 10%. 2014 subsidies will drop to 20%, after which the subsidy aspect of this project will end.
For more information, visit the project’s “How to Join” web page at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/join or contact project manager Will Stuivenga: [email protected] 360.704.5217, or toll-free 866.538.4996.

2) MAYDAY! MAYDAY!
Heritage Preservation and other members of the Heritage Emergency Task Force are encouraging libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and preservation organizations to set aside Wednesday, May 1, 2013, to participate in MayDay, a national effort to prepare for disasters. Heritage Preservation is collecting examples of creative but practical measures to prepare for an emergency. Share a brief description of your organization’s 2013 MayDay plans or accomplishments by Friday, May 31, 2013, and you will be entered in a drawing for disaster supplies donated by Gaylord Brothers.
Any organization can participate in MayDay by setting aside some time to do one simple thing to become more prepared. To participate, consider doing at least one of the following activities:
- Updating your institution’s disaster plan;
- If you don’t have a plan, make a deadline for developing one;
- Give a tour of your building and collections to your local firefighters and police;
- Update your staff emergency contact information;
- Make sure your building is safe – eliminate hazards such as boxes and furniture in hallways, blocked fire exits, or improper storage of paints and solvents.

3) TARGET EARLY CHILDHOOD READING GRANTS
Reading makes a world of difference in learning. To support programs that foster a love of reading and encourage young children from preschool through third grade to read together with their families, Target is making available Early Childhood Reading Grants of $2,000 each to support programs, such as library storytimes and family reading nights, that will take place between September 2013 and August 2014. Libraries applying for grants must be located within 100 miles of a Target store. Applications must be received by 10:00 a.m. PDT, April 30, 2013. To apply, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/TargetReading.

4) BANNED BOOKS WEEK EVENT GRANTS
Banned Books Week, celebrating the freedom to read, will be observed this year from September 22 – 30. Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 Judith F. Krug Memorial Fund Banned Books Week event grants, sponsored by the Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF). Grants of $1,000 and $2,500 will be given to organizations in support of activities that celebrate Banned Books Week, such as “Read-Outs,” in which people gather to read from books that have been banned or challenged over the years. Applications are due Tuesday, April 30, 2013. For additional information and to apply, go to www.ftrf.org/?2013_KrugBBW. Questions? Contact Jonathan Kelley at [email protected] or 800.545.2433, x 4226.

5) HAVE A PROBLEM? GET ADVICE FROM DEAR DONIA
What should I do to preserve my family color photographs that are fading? How can I preserve my child’s baby quilt that was made by her great-grandmother? Preservation Week 2013 will include the unveiling of a new preservation advice column for the general public, “Dear Donia.” What “Dear Abby” was to personal relationships, Dear Donia will be for preservation conundrums.
Donia Conn will host the official launch of her column on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 8:00 a.m. PDT with a one-hour live chat on the Preservation Week Facebook page (www.facebook.com/preservationweek), where she will be answering questions about preservation. Leave your hankies at home and spend some quality time with Dear Donia. If your problem can’t wait, get help now by visiting www.atyourlibrary.org/passiton/dear-donia.
