1) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Letters About Literature encourages young readers in grades 4 through 10 to write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, explaining how his or her work shaped their perspective on the world or themselves. Letter writers compete at 3 levels:

  • Level 1: Grades 4 – 6;
  • Level 2: Grades 7 – 8;
  • Level 3: Grades 9 – 10.

One letter from each level from each state is entered into the national competition, which awards $1,000 in cash to the winner. This is the eighth year the Washington State Library (WSL) has sponsored the competition as part of Washington Reads. Of the 3,400 Washington students who entered the 2013 Letters About Literature contest, 325 were selected as semifinalists. Of that number, the following 3 students were selected as state champions:

  • Cora Tessaro, the Level 1 champion, is a 5th grader at Daniel Bagley Elementary School, Seattle. She wrote her letter to Eric Schlosser about his book, Chew on This;
  • Julia Batson, the Level 2 champion, is a 7th grader at Woodward Middle School, Bainbridge Island. She wrote her letter to Randa Abdel-Fattah about her book, Ten Things I Hate About Me;
  • Jordyn Tonkinson, the Level 3 champion, is a 9th grader at Hockinson High School, Brush Prairie. She wrote her letter to Garth Stein about his book, The Art of Racing in the Rain.

There will be a ceremony in the Columbia Room at the State Capitol in Olympia on May 24 at 1:30 p.m. to recognize the champions, second place runners up, and honorable mentions. To find out more, and to read the winning letters, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WaLAL2013.

2) CONNECT WITH YOUR LIBRARY – A MOBILE APP FOR WASHINGTON

WSL is delighted to announce a $200,000 grant from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation which, in combination with Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds, will develop a mobile application or “app” to connect patrons with their libraries. Libraries that sign up by Friday, April 19, 2013, will have the opportunity to be in the initial phase of implementation.

LSTA funds will pay for development costs of a mobile app for academic, public, and tribal libraries to connect individuals with the library’s online services. Two statewide apps, one for academic libraries and one for public libraries, will be developed. The Allen Foundation funds will pay for public and tribal libraries to use and test the application for the year 2014. Academic libraries will need to pay the subscription fee themselves. Allen Foundation Funds will also pay for a statewide internet PR campaign to publicize the application’s availability.

After the completion of a formal procurement process, and with the advice of an advisory committee, Boopsie was selected as the vendor for this project. More information, including a listing of app features and the Intent to Participate Form can be found at: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/app. Questions? 3) GRANT CYCLE FOR EARLY LEARNING EXTENDED

There’s still time to apply for Early Achievers Outreach Partnership (EAOP) grants, which will:

  • Help local public libraries partner with the Department of Early Learning (DEL) to build awareness of key early learning initiatives among Washington families;
  • Identify best practices for future partnerships between public libraries and DEL on early learning public awareness and family engagement initiatives.

With $9,000 remaining in funding, WSL is extending the grant cycle for an additional two weeks and would like to encourage all public libraries to apply. Applications may be submitted from an individual public library or a public library system. Mini-grants of no less than $500 and no more than $1,000 per qualifying outlet will be awarded in collaboration with the Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP), thanks to a generous Race to the Top – Early Learning Challenge grant awarded to DEL by the U.S. Department of Education. Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $25,000.

The extended deadline to apply is Friday, April 19, 2013. WSL reserves the right to limit the number and amount of awards to public library systems in order to ensure that funds are distributed in regions where there are local efforts to increase Early Achievers participation. More details may be found at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/grants. Information about Early Achievers may be found at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/EarlyAchievers. Questions? 4) FREE WESTPAS WORKSHOP COMES TO OLYMPIA

Fire, floods, earthquakes, broken pipes – disasters can happen at any time, endangering both lives and property, and damaging or destroying a community’s cultural heritage. Having a plan in place and knowing what to do in advance can prevent or help to mitigate damage and loss.

5) SNEAK PREVIEW OF WASHINGTON LIBRARY TRUSTEE WIKI

The Washington State Library has published trustee manuals for public libraries in the past (2001, 2002), and is about to release a new online edition with extensive updating reflecting the many changes that have occurred in the past decade including:

  • Legislation affecting libraries;
  • New technologies that have affected the way libraries interact with and serve their communities;
  • The governance of the Washington State Library.

While working on the revision of the Manual, it seemed logical to move from print to an online format to more easily and readily connect users to the underlying RCWs, WACs, Articles of the State Constitution, AG Opinions, etc., that were the basis for statements made in this new electronic publication. Additional resources from a wide variety of organizations and agencies provide additional clarification and guidance at the click of a mouse or a tap on a touch screen. These include:

  • United for Libraries (formerly Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations), a division of ALA;
  • The Municipal Research and Services Center of Washington (MRSC);
  • The Washington State Department of Revenue;
  • The Washington State Auditor’s Office.

Come to the sneak preview of the wiki and see how easy it will be to connect to the information you need. Two sessions of this online presentation, sponsored by Washington Library Friends, Foundations, Trustees & Advocates (WLFFTA), will be offered.
