1) GRADUATE STUDY SCHOLARSHIPS

The Washington Library Association (WLA) is now accepting applications for Maryan E. Reynolds Scholarships from WLA members who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS degree program and have completed at least one semester or quarter. One or more scholarships, up to $6,000 per recipient, will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate leadership potential in the profession and a commitment to libraries and library service.

2) HEALTHY LIVING GRANT PROGRAM

The American Medical Association (AMA), supported by Purdue Pharma L.P., and with additional support from Teva Pharmaceutical, will award 30 grants of $8,000 to $10,000 for its 2013 Healthy Living Grant Program. The Program funds health education programs for school and community-based solutions to behavioral health challenges. Project criteria include:

  • Partnership with a medical organization;
  • A target audience that is an underserved or at-risk population;
  • A target audience of youth or young adults between the ages of 2 – 21.

3) COMMUNITY GRANTS HELP TEENS BUILD 21ST CENTURY SKILLS

As technology becomes more ingrained in our society, we know it is increasingly necessary for youth to develop the 21st century skills that will set them up for future career success. Yet, we also know that a participation gap exists. Too many teens have little or no access to technology and, as a result, they fall behind their peers. Meanwhile, teens that do have access can benefit greatly by moving beyond mere consumption and towards engaging in the learning opportunities technology can offer.

Best Buy Children’s Foundation is offering up to $2,000,000 in Community Grants to local and regional nonprofit organizations that provide teens with places and opportunities to develop 21st century technology skills that will inspire future education and career choices. Examples of program activities eligible for grant support include:

  • Computer programming;
  • Digital imaging (photography, graphic design, videography);
  • Music production;
  • Robotics;
  • Gaming and mobile app development.

The average grant amount is $5,000. Awards will not exceed $10,000 per applicant. For additional information, go to pr.bby.com/community-grants. Grant proposals are due by 8:59 p.m. PDT, Monday, July 1, 2013.

4) US CENSUS EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

There’s a wealth of information in the statistics collected by the United States Census Bureau, but mining this data can be intimidating. Help is at hand! The Bureau offers both web-based and in-person courses to make accessing and using Census Bureau statistics easier. Free E-Learning Tutorials in their Training Resources Library include the following titles:

5) SURVEY FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE INSTITUTIONS

The Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) of the Association of Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of ALA, is seeking cultural heritage institutions engaged in preservation activities to take “A Survey of Preservation Activities in Cultural Heritage Institutions – FY2012.” The goal of this pilot survey is to document the state of preservation activities in the digital era through quantitative data that facilitates information sharing and the ability to track changes in the preservation and conservation fields over time.
