1) THERE’S STILL TIME TO SING WITH OUR KIDS
A few spaces are still available for free workshops, Sing With Our Kids, where Nancy Stewart will show attendees how to:
- Plan and host multi-generational singing events that educate participants about the role singing plays in early literacy while building family and community;
- Raise awareness of library resources while facilitating their use across all areas of a young child’s life, from home and extended family to school and community;
- Incorporate technology responsibly into early literacy programming and community outreach;
- Enhance programming with extensive free materials.
This program is for multi-generational groups and is appropriate for both libraries and community partners. Staff from senior centers and retirement homes, community organizers, day care providers, and school personnel are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided for all who come. Registration will close for each session either when capacity has been reached or 2 weeks prior to the session so that catering can be arranged. Workshops will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. PDT at the following locations:
- Thursday, September 26, Timberland Regional Library Service Center, Tumwater;
- Friday, September 27, Fort Vancouver Regional Library, Vancouver;
- Monday, September 30, Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, Seattle;
- Friday, October 25, Spokane County – Moran Prairie Branch, Spokane.

2) INFOCAMP SEATTLE 2013
You’re invited to InfoCamp Seattle 2013, an unconference for the information community. It features an egalitarian, community-driven format in which the agenda is created during the event, so anyone can sign up to lead a session. This year’s opening keynote will be given by Joan Vermette, a User Experience Designer with Mad*Pow in Boston, and creator of the game, Organizational Parkour.

3) CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR NOVEMBER ALKI
The editor of Alki, the journal of the Washington Library Association (WLA), is currently seeking submissions for the November 2013 issue, which will focus on “Collaboration.”
Please send article idea(s) to [email protected] and include:
- Your name and position/library;
- Description of the article;
- Suggested title;
- Estimated length (in pages of 750 words, or less if graphics are included);
- Graphics, if any, and type (e.g., photograph, logo, etc.);
- Contact information.

4) PLEDGE TO PREPARE
Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month? More than 3,000 organizations are supporting emergency preparedness efforts and encouraging all Americans to get involved. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has created the National Preparedness Community, which allows individuals and organizations to participate in emergency preparedness awareness throughout the year. Community members have access to exclusive resources, including a free toolkit to help promote emergency preparedness activities and events, and the ability to collaborate with thousands of fellow members across the country. The Heritage Emergency National Task Force has joined the National Preparedness Community and urges other institutions to “Pledge to Prepare.” To join the Community, go to sos.wa.gov/q/NPC.

5) PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY’S CULTURAL HERITAGE
Burst pipes, floods, fires, earthquakes. All these and more can threaten collections. Spaces are still available for the free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop, Protecting Cultural Collections, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and sponsored by WESTPAS and the Seattle Heritage Emergency Response Network (SHERN). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States. This 2-part training is free to participants, who will:
- Complete a disaster response and collection salvage plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
- Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
- Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
- Understand how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
- Have hands-on practice in salvage procedures for a variety of materials including books, documents, photographs, and objects.

- Part 2: Response & Recovery: Thursday, November 7, 2013, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;

- Workshop instructor: Gary Menges, retired Preservation Administrator at the University of Washington Libraries, and member of AIC-CERT (American Institute for Conservation – Collections Emergency Response Team);
