This Nov. 22 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. As the world reflects on the late president’s life and legacy, the Washington State Archives is presenting photos of the president during his visits to our Washington in the early 1960s.
The photo shown above is part of the Archives’ Evelyn Johnson Collection. The picture helps document Kennedy’s last trip to Washington state, made in September of 1963, just two months before he was murdered in Dallas. In the photo, Gov. Albert Rosellini and U.S. Sen. Warren Magnuson accompany Kennedy at Sea-Tac Airport.
More details about President Kennedy’s trip to Washington in 1963 can be found in these articles in the Seattle P-I and the Seattle Times.

The News Tribune did an excellent feature in September on President Kennedy’s visit to Tacoma, where he gave a speech before the largest crowd ever at Cheney Stadium.
About a week later, a TNT reader informed the paper he had a rare recording of the original television coverage of the speech.
