1) 2014 LEGISLATIVE SESSION
As we have in previous years, the Washington State Library (WSL) is partnering with the Washington Library Association (WLA) to post proposed legislation that may affect libraries if passed. This information, compiled by WLA’s Legislative Planning Committee may be found under “Updates” on the Washington State Library Blog located at blogs.sos.wa.gov/library.
Each week, give or take a day or two, a new update will be received and posted on WSL’s Blog. A link from the blog to WLA’s site for Library Related Legislation and its resources will be included with each new post for your convenience. To see to the post for the period ending January 17, 2014, go to sos.wa.gov/q/LegSession2014.

2) EZRA JACK KEATS MINIGRANTS
Public education is one of the greatest legacies of our country, benefiting children from every walk of life. For Ezra Jack Keats, it was at public school that he received his greatest encouragement to pursue his vocation as an artist and at the public library where he found a haven that introduced him to the wonders of art history.
To provide a similar experience to new generations, the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation created a funding initiative called Minigrants, in which awards of $500 are given to public schools and public libraries for projects that foster creative expression, collaboration, and interaction with a diverse community.
To find out more about the Minigrants and to apply, visit ezra-jack-keats.org/minigrant-program. Applications are due by 8:59 p.m. PDT, Saturday, March 15, 2014.

3) REGISTER YOUR 2014 NATIONAL DÍA PROGRAM TODAY
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA, is inviting librarians to register their 2014 El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) programs at the new Día website, which also offers free program downloads, Día resources, and ideas for celebrating this event. Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures.
By registering their Día programs held throughout the year in the national registry, librarians will help build a searchable database will allow them to share their program information with other librarians and members of the public interested in learning more about Día programs happening around the country. Libraries that register will also receive Día stickers, buttons and bookmarks (while supplies last).
For more information on Día and to register, visit dia.ala.org.

4) SPECTRUM SCHOLARSHIPS – ENCOURAGING DIVERSITY
Although librarians may be engaged in a wide variety of activities, they do not always reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship specifically addresses the underrepresentation of librarians of color within the current workforce by providing a one-time, non-renewable $5,000 award to the successful applicant. To date, over 700 students from traditionally underrepresented groups have received scholarships, leadership training, professional networking and mentoring in order to build a pool of talented and trained library leaders reflective of the populations served by all libraries.
Applications are currently being accepted for the Spectrum Scholarships. Official academic transcripts must be received by ALA on or before Saturday, February 1, 2014. Completed online applications and supporting documentation must be submitted by Saturday, March 1, 2014. For additional information and to apply, visit sos.wa.gov/q/Spectrum.
