1) GATHERING IDEAS FOR FUTURE STATEWIDE PROJECTS

The Library Council of Washington (LCW) wants to hear your thoughts and ideas about how 2014 LSTA funding should be used in Washington State. Approximately $300,000 is available to support one or more new ideas for projects/activities that are statewide in scope. Ideas may target specific needs, take advantage of emerging technology or other opportunities, or target a specific segment or user group of the Washington library community. Resulting projects could range from technical assistance and training, to the development of services and collaborative efforts, to competitive grant programs. The strongest ideas will be consistent with both the LCW priorities and guiding principles.

LCW has identified the following specific priorities as critical to the advancement of library services, or as filling gaps in service that need to be addressed at a statewide level. (Note: Priorities are not listed in any particular order.):

  • Advance applied literacy in the state of Washington in areas such as legal research, health information, employment/job searching, and developing civic/voter education resources;
  • Enhance libraries’ relevancy in a democratic society;
  • Serve underserved, unserved, and culturally diverse communities and populations.

For additional information and to link to the submission form, go to sos.wa.gov/q/Gather2014. Questions? Contact Jeff Martin at [email protected] or 360.704.5248; or Allyson Ruppenthal at [email protected] or 360.704.5246. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 07, 2014.

3) FREE MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID WORKSHOP

When ALA surveyed 1,300 public library supervisors, nine out of ten said that patrons with a mental illness have disturbed or affected the use of the library by other people. To address this issue, WSL will be offering a new in-person workshop, Mental Health First Aid, which will help participants identify, understand, and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses and know how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

At this 8-hour workshop, led by certified instructors following a national curriculum, attendees will learn how to:

  • Identify risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems;
  • Find resources and information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and addiction disorders;
  • Implement a five-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health problem or someone already in crisis;
  • Identify where to turn for help in regard to professional, peer, and self-help resources.

All workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Wednesday, March 5 – Compass Health Everett: Sander’s Training Center, Everett;
  • Wednesday, March 12 – Timberland Regional Library Service Center, Tumwater;
  • Tuesday, April 1 – Richland Public Library, Richland;
  • Tuesday, June 10 – Comprehensive Mental Health Yakima, Yakima;
  • Thursday, June 19 – Whatcom County Library Processing and Administrative Office, Bellingham;
  • Monday, July 14 – Fort Vancouver Regional Library – Vancouver Branch, Vancouver;
  • Thursday, July 24 – Washington State Library, Tumwater;
