1) FIRST TUESDAYS – STREAMLINE YOUR WEBSITE
Did your library’s website grow quickly, perhaps without a clear direction or consideration for responsive design? Do statistics show that many pages on your site get low use? Come to next week’s First Tuesdays webinar, Streamline Content for Your Users & You: Content strategy for sustainable site maintenance, where Christa Werle will share how Sno-Isle Libraries tackled these issues and how they were able to get support for these unglamorous, yet important, web projects. Leave this session knowing the benefits of doing a website content analysis, usability studies, and the steps you can take to put your own streamlining project into action.
Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on March 4, 2014, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. 2) IMPROVING LIBRARY SERVICES TO TRIBAL COMMUNITIES
In response to a Presidential Executive Order in 2011, the Department of Interior (DOI) Library surveyed the nation’s tribal college and university communities to determine how the federal government could increase the capacity of educational agencies and institutions to deliver high-quality educational and social services to all American Indian and Alaskan Native students. To share the results of this study, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), DOI, and FEDLINK (Federal Library Information Network), are inviting representatives from federal, state, public, academic, and special libraries and library associations serving American Indians to a free workshop entitled American Indian Libraries Initiative: Making Connections, which will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. PDT, Monday, March 31, 2014. This event will enable participants to:
- Connect with their colleagues across the country;
- Learn about resources available via FEDLINK, the DOI Library, and IMLS;
- Hear from libraries, including the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Library of Washington State, which have benefited from the IMLS Native American Library Services grants program.

3) FREE LANKES BOOK FOR DOWNLOAD
Libraries have existed for millennia, but today many question their necessity. In an ever more digital and connected world, do we still need places that provide books to our towns, colleges, or schools? If libraries aren’t about books, what are they about?
In Expect More: Demanding Better Libraries for Today’s Complex World, David Lankes, professor and Dean’s Scholar for the New Librarianship at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and director of the Information Institute of Syracuse, argues that, to thrive, communities need libraries that go beyond bricks and mortar and beyond books and literature. Libraries should be places of learning, as well as advocates for their communities in terms of privacy, intellectual property, and economic development. Expect More is a rallying call to communities to raise the bar and their expectations for great libraries.
By making the digital version of the book freely available it is hoped that more librarians can use the book to engage their boards, principals, and provosts in a constructive conversation about the future of their libraries. It is also hoped that the library community can engage in a conversation on how to improve the book and its impact. 4) SECOND WEBINAR ON IMMIGRATION AND CITIZENSHIP
IMLS and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will be hosting the second in their series of free webinars about immigration and U.S. citizenship topics for public libraries with USCIS Citizenship Education and Initiatives, from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. PST, Thursday, March 6, 2014. This series was developed as part of a partnership between IMLS and USCIS to ensure that librarians have the necessary tools and knowledge to refer their patrons to accurate and reliable sources of information on immigration-related topics.
This presentation will build on many of the topics discussed in the first USCIS-IMLS webinar held on February 4, 2014, but will also:
- Highlight USCIS educational resources related to citizenship and the naturalization process, as well as information on how libraries can actively engage in citizenship-related activities and events;
- Review USCIS resources designed to protect individuals from immigration services scams;
- Discuss the types of assistance librarians can provide to immigrant patrons.

5) CELEBRATE PRESERVATION WEEK 2014
Every year, the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of ALA, encourages libraries and other institutions to increase awareness of the importance of preservation for both personal and library collections through Preservation Week, which will be celebrated this year from April 27 – May 3. Don’t miss this opportunity to share your stories, create displays about preserving personal, family, or community heritage, or take advantage of free Preservation Week resources such as the Preservation Toolkit and webinars on preservation.
