Timberland Libraries boost service hours.
Library patrons in the five-county Timberland Regional Library (TRL) service area asked for longer hours: as of September 2, they’ve got them! District-wide, 26 libraries and the Ask-A-Librarian service added hours – a total of 58 more each week. The increased scheduled comes at no additional cost. Born out of a desire to help local businesses prosper, grow or begin, the Spokane County Library District (SCLD) is launching a new card designed just for business users. (The Current, Liberty Lake, 09/00/14).

Rural library district creates ‘digital petting zoo’ with grant: Tour of items planned for this fall.
The Libraries of Stevens County was one of 12 libraries awarded a grant this summer to support digital literacy efforts in Washington State. The grant cycle provided funding for digital literacy projects which focused on giving patrons the ability to perform business transactions in a digital environment, using technology to retrieve information and helping patrons to develop skills to enhance their employability by using email and online job searches. Olympia library marks 100 years.
One hundred years ago this October, Olympia’s first permanent public library (now Olympia Timberland Library) opened in the Carnegie Building in downtown Olympia. (Tenino Independent, Tenino, 09/10/14).

School pulls plug on library.
Morton School District’s participation in the Timberland Regional Library (TRL) project has ended. In a 2-1 vote on Monday night, the board’s action killed participation efforts to house a Morton TRL branch at Morton High School. (The East County Journal, Morton, 09/17/14).

Three girls, one idea, seven books.
When three friends – Mackenzie Lindh, Trista Coleman, and Laura Pence- came up with one and the same idea, the result was seven new titles for the bookshelves of the Mountain View Timberland Library in Randle. “We wanted to buy some new books for the children at the library,” said Mackenzie, a fourth grade student at White Pass Elementary School. “Our thought was to make some signs and hold them up along the road so people could give money,” said Trista, a fifth grade student. It happens. Every once in a great while, story comes along that makes you pause. It makes you slow down long enough to read or listen to it. And then you pause again. Sometimes you talk about it with others. People can see that it meant something to you and it makes them want to read it too. “The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympic,” By Daniel James Brown is such a book.
