New checkout for library (Spokesman Review, 08/21/14).

Timberland extending hours: District wide, 58 open hours added each week.
Library patrons in the five-county Timberland Regional Library (TRL) service area asked for longer hours. And according to TRL officials, starting September 2, they will have them. District wide, 26 libraries and the Ask-A-Librarian service will add hours- a total of 58 more each week. The increased schedules come at no additional cost. Officials to advise assessor on property tax shift: Commissioners will make recommendations at Tuesday meeting (Skagit Valley Herald, Mount Vernon, 05/09/14).

Bellingham library open Sundays beginning Sept 7.
The central branch of Bellingham Public Library will reopen on Sundays staring Sept. 7. The library at 210 Central Ave will open 1 to 5 pm on Sundays because the Bellingham City Council included money in the 2014 budget, which was adopted in December, to restore the hours. Ice water hits library bear.
The Whitman County Library’s Book Bear got doused with ice water Monday in response to an “Ice Bucket Challenge” from the Asotin Library staff. The practice sweeping the country is a benefit for ALS research, in which people agree to donate to the cause or get doused with ice water. Many do both. Whitman County Library Executive Director Kristie Kirkpatrick said that the event was a tribute to the late Marie Doak, who was a longtime library staff member who suffered from ALS. She retired from the library at age 86 and died a year later. The library staff challenged Mayor Todd Vanek, the county commissioners and the Cat in the Hat. North Olympic Library System seeks artworks, crafts.
The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) is inviting local artists, hobbyists, and craftspeople to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, by submitting original works of art for a themed, wilderness-inspired show inside the Port Angeles Library. Awards

Washington State honors Carpenter Memorial Library.
Secretary of State Kim Wyman has named the Carpenter Memorial Library a Century Corporation. City Administrator Matt Morton said, ‘The award recognizes the fact that the library has been continuously incorporated for the last 100 years, since 1014.’ (Northern Kittitas County Tribune, Cle, Elum, 08/28/14).

Newcastle library lights win awards for designer.
A Seattle-based firm called dark/light design won two national awards for lighting in the Newcastle Public Library. The firm won a 2013 GE Edison Award for Environmental Design and an award of merit from the Illuminating Engineering Society. (Daily Journal of Commerce, Seattle, 09/23/14).

Silverdale Library finds its home.
The new Silverdale Library will be at Bucklin Hill Road and Blaine Avenue along the Clear Creek Trail after a unanimous vote by the Kitsap Regional Library’s board Tuesday night. The board chose from three sties- the Central Kitsap Community Campus, the existing two-story building on Randall Way behind the campus and an empty lot by the Clear Creek Trail on Bucklin Hill. KRL estimated a 10,000 –square-foot building and 40 parking spots will require about 1.5 acres and cost about $5.8 million. The new building will double the size of the Silverdale branch. The Mount Vernon City Library and the city of Mount Vernon staffers and I want to thank Mount Vernon Elks Lodge 1604 members for its support of the library’s Read the Book/See the Movies day, July 26, at the Lincoln Theater. A great book and two great movies based on the book – “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” – were sandwiched around a barbecue and ice cream social in Pine Square all free to participants. Library Notes: Why are libraries so important?
If the Kindle can provide immeasurable books at a fraction of the cost, why not simply turn to this option? …people don’t just go to libraries for books, and technology isn’t the solution to every problem. The library is a social gathering place, used to conduct classes and provide people with public resources – including computer and wireless networks for those who can’t access them at home and struggle to find their footing in a world dominated by technology. Serving the library
Joyce DeChenne was named to fill a vacant position on the Grand Coulee Library Board. She was recommended to the council by chair Diane Canady. She replaces Terri McPherson who had served two terms on the board. The appointment is for five years. (The Star, Grand Coulee, 09/10/14).

Book ‘n bikes
Nareny Cruz was among four children who won a bike this summer from the Quincy Masons. The Masons gave away a bike to one lucky boy and one lucky girl at both the Quincy and George public libraries. (Quincy Valley Post, Quincy, 08/28/14).

Calling all photographers, artists for Community Reads.
During the month of February 2015, the Friends of the White Salmon Valley Community Library will sponsor its first Community Reads event. The event is named ‘KOOBDOOGA’(“A Good Book” backwards). The featured book is “Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: the Epic Live and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis” by Seattle author Timothy Egan. Reading wrap-up
The 2014 Summer Reading Program at the Jefferson County Library in Port Hadlock wrapped up recently with a reading from librarian, Karen Wyman. She read a Pete the Cat story by Eric Litwin while participants ate ice cream provided by the Friends of the Jefferson County Library. (Peninsula Daily News, Port Angeles, 09/01/14).

Music for babies on tap at PA Library
Music for Baby & Me storytimes will be offered at the Port Angeles Library. This program features songs, fingerplays and rhymes for babies up to 24 months old and their parents or caregivers. Music for Baby & Me storytimes are free and will occur every Friday until Nov. 21 and from Jan 9 to May 22. (Peninsula Daily News, Port Angeles, 9/11/14).

Weekly kids program to resume at library
Kindergarten Express, a weekly program designed for children 4-5 years old will resume at the Port Angeles Library. The free storytime series at the library features picture books, fingerplays, music, science projects and crafts designed to help prepare preschoolers for kindergarten. Artist brings beauty of desert habitat to life.
The work of award-winning artist Danna Dal Porto is being shown in the art gallery of the Quincy Public Library through November. The Quincy woman is known widely for her exceptional artistry depicting the desert habitat that exists in the local area. (Quincy Valley Post, Quincy, 09/04/14).
