1) CREATING A MOBILE MAKERSPACE PROGRAM

The next First Tuesdays webinar is Creating a Mobile Makerspace Program presented by Luke Ellington, North Central Regional Library (NCRL), on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PST.

North Central Regional Library developed its Mobile Makerspace program to engage teen patrons with educational programming. To serve patrons in 30 branches across 5 counties, the program needed to be able to travel and operate with a limited number of employees.

Join us as Luke describes the STEM/STEAM tools acquired and NCRL’s makerspace-style approach. He’ll also identify the pitfalls they discovered and what NCRL is doing today to steer clear of those in the future.

2) WSL HOSTS “LEARN AND TEACH” CODING PRECONFERENCE

In just over an hour, using free, simple tools, you can learn all you need to know to host a coding program or camp at your library. Spend a day with us, and you’ll learn enough to create a coding culture.

3) HACK THE CLASSROOM DIGITAL EVENT

The “hacking” spirit has captured the hearts of educators around the world – more and more educators are transforming the way they teach and the way their students learn.

We invite each and every educator on the planet to join us on:

  • Saturday, January 30, 2016 from 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. PST to be amazed, empowered, and inspired by this wonderfully disruptive movement in education.

Initiatives such as Hour of Code and the Maker Movement have been groundbreaking, which is why we are excited to announce this three-hour event focused on bringing the leaders of these movements to you for a live, interactive session to share the stories of teachers and students who have embraced the “Hack the Classroom” mentality and are inspiring thousands of other schools and libraries to do the same.

4) DFI TO HOST MONEY SMART WEEK

The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) invites school and public libraries throughout Washington to participate in Financial Capability Month during April and Money Smart Week (MSW) from April 23 – 30, 2016.

  • The Department of Financial Institutions would like to expand the MSW Reading Days Event to public libraries along with the elementary schools. Reading Days events involve a local public figure, a library staff member or volunteer, or a DFI staff member reading a financial-based story book in an elementary school or public library.
  • Along with the reading, DFI will host a Budget for Your Bank game. This non-competitive game teaches how to budget $10.00 of play “income”. Players pick between four piggy bank options and several different types of stickers to decorate their bank, keeping in mind they have a limited budget. If participants save at least 10% of their income, they receive a super saver prize.
  • The game involves math, decision making, budgeting skills, and money management, encouraging kids to think as they play.
  • All supplies for the reading and the “Budget for Your Bank” activities are provided by the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions and the events are free to libraries as well as the participants.
  • MSW activities are most effective for K-5th grade students, the ages when children are developing life-long money habits.

5) WORKFORCE SUPPORT NEWS

Two news items regarding workforce support:

 

  • The launch of Monster.com for jobseekers has been delayed until the Ides of March. An updated “go live” date of March 15, 2016 means that training for library staff will also be postponed. Stay tuned in the next 4-6 weeks for an announcement of training webinars to acquaint library staff with the new system, and how we can be prepared to best support job seekers and local businesses’ use of the new platform.

The Washington State Library, in conjunction with the Washington Library Association, is launching a survey to assess the training needs of library staff in Washington State.
