Built in 1914, this iconic structure might be seen as just an older landmark in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, the one with the unique conical roof. But did you know that Smith Tower was the tallest building on the West Coast for about 50 years?

The building’s observation deck offers visitors 360-degree views of Seattle, including the Space Needle, Great Wheel, sports stadiums, as well as Mount Rainier and the Olympics in the distance.

The State Digital Archives has this great 1950s photo of the Smith Tower when it still dominated Seattle’s skyline. The photo is part of the State Library Photograph Collection, 1851-1990. The collection includes more than 5,000 images of various subjects related to Washington’s history, people, geography and economic development.
