1) SEX IN THE LIBRARY WEBINAR

Sex in the Library presented by Mary Jo Heller and Aarene Storms

Do you have sex in your library? If not, why not? The authors of Sex in the Library (VOYA, 2013) explain their unique and popular approach to talking to parents, teachers, administrators, and librarians about selection, public and school library missions, censorship, and the power of school and public librarians working together. This interactive webinar features an honest discussion of books and their intended audience. Participants will leave with clear knowledge of books discussed, guidelines for looking at others, and a list of the newest steamy books for teen readers.

This free web presentation allows attendees to share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. 2) DPLA METADATA APPLICATION PROFILE WEBINAR

Join librarians and archivists throughout the Northwest for an overview of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)’s Metadata Application Profile (MAP), presented by Gretchen Gueguen, Data Services Coordinator, Digital Public Library of America.

• Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. PDT

Gretchen will provide:

• An introduction to the DPLA MAP and its core classes;
• A deeper look at MAP properties and how these typically correspond to local digital collection elements;
• Information on how institutions can improve their data and local data-creation practices;
• An explanation of DPLA’s enrichment of data supplied by its network of service hubs.
• Her presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

3) GALE PUBLIC LIBRARY RENEWAL

In partnership with Washington Public Libraries Cooperate! (WPLC), the Washington State Library Statewide Database Licensing Project and Gale Cengage Learning are pleased to offer the 2017 Gale online database group purchase options. This offer is available for all public libraries and provides unlimited number of users and remote access for the subscription term of January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017.

4) EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES COUNCIL

The Expanded Learning Opportunities Council (ELOC) is charged by RCW 28A.630.123 to advise the Governor, the Legislature, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction regarding a comprehensive expanded learning opportunities system.

An ELO Community Forum is scheduled

5) DIGITAL RESOURCES ARE TAX EXEMPT

The Washington State Library reminds libraries that they are eligible to claim an exemption to sales tax on digital products and services that are made freely available to the public. If a library provides access to its digital resources to anyone who walks in, or who is an authorized library patron, those resources are almost certainly eligible for an exemption to sales tax.

To claim an exemption, the library must file an exemption certificate with each vendor. More information about the law and the exemption, including links to the exemption certificate, are available via this shortcut link: sos.wa.gov/q/tax.
