1) UPCOMING PROQUEST TRAINING
ProQuest’s Washington trainer, Jeff Cutler, is offering in-person training sessions at several Washington locations. While the sessions are being held at Educational Services Districts, they will be general in nature, and appropriate for any library staff interested in the latest enhancements to and features of the various ProQuest products included in the statewide contract. 2) WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE NAMED A BEST SITE
Washington Rural Heritage is named one of 75 Best State Genealogy Websites in 2016 by Family Tree Magazine.
Washington Rural Heritage is a collaborative digitization program headquartered at the Washington State Library. The project brings together unique local history materials from libraries, museums, and the private collections of citizens throughout Washington.

3) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE CONTEST
The annual Letters About Literature contest first deadline is nearing! Please encourage teachers and students in grades 4 – 12 at your school or in your library service area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.
- Level 3 (grades 9-12) entries must be postmarked by December 2, 2016.
- Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 9, 2017.

The 24th annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, State Libraries and other organizations. This is the 12th year that Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, has sponsored Letters About Literature as part of Washington Reads.

4) 2ND ANNUAL HISTORICAL ZINE CONTEST
Washington State Library is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Historical Zine Contest. Participants are asked to create a Zine about some aspect of Washington history using primary resources.
Entries will be accepted from four age groups:
- Grades 4-6
- Grades 7-9
- Grades 10-12
- Adults of all ages
Entries will be accepted from September 1 – December 15, 2016. See the Zine webpage for more information and a video about how to make a zine.

5) NEA BIG READ ACCEPTING GRANT APPLICATIONS
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is accepting applications for NEA Big Read grants.
- The deadline is Thursday, January 26, 2017 to apply for 2017-2018 grants.
NEA Big Read is a national program that offers grants to support organizations to develop community-wide programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences.
