1) WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE GRANTS

Would your library like to digitize its historical materials and special collections? Create an online community archive of unique materials from local family collections? Partner with nearby historical societies and other organizations to collaboratively digitize local history resources?

Washington Rural Heritage (WRH), the Washington State Library’s statewide digitization initiative for public and tribal libraries, is currently accepting grant applications for 2017-2018 digitization projects:

  • This grant cycle is open to all public and tribal libraries currently lacking a functioning digital repository. Current WRH partners are not excluded.
  • Libraries from communities of any size may apply at either the system or individual branch level.
  • The application deadline is Wednesday, May 31, 2017.
  • To review eligibility requirements, grant guidelines, and to download grant applications, go to http://sos.wa.gov/q/grants.

Collections digitized with these grants will be publicly accessible at www.washingtonruralheritage.org. To date, more than 125 cultural institutions throughout Washington have contributed to this growing collection of digitized primary sources. Learn more about the project and see a full list of contributors by visiting www.washingtonruralheritage.org/cdm/about.

For questions and to discuss potential projects, applicants are encouraged to contact Evan Robb, WRH Project Manager, at 360-704-5228 or [email protected].

2) USER EXPERIENCE JUMPSTART

The State Library’s “User Experience Jumpstart” workshop is filling up fast. The two April Westside sessions are all full but there’s still a little space in the Ellensburg and Spokane sessions. If you are a disappointed Puget Sound Librarian wishing you’d registered sooner, keep in mind that Ellensburg is probably as easy to get to as Lacey or Burlington (no I-5 traffic!). Sign up for these workshops via the WSL Training Calendar.

Here’s the workshop description: By designing your library with the user experience in mind, you have the potential to deepen the connection your library has with its community, and make your library a place that people love to use. This hands-on workshop is a practical guide to assessing and improving all sorts of touchpoints in your library, and also covers foundational UX theory. You’ll get experience with important user research techniques, and analyzing the resulting data. After this workshop you’ll have a keener critical eye, and a framework with which you can make your library the most important place in your community.

3) METADATA CLEANUP GRANTS

The Washington State Library (WSL) is offering Metadata Cleanup Grants to support public, academic, and tribal libraries in remediating, re-cataloging, and/or enhancing digital collection records currently available to the public through digital library and digital repository systems. The primary purpose of these grants is to help institutions prepare for the eventual harvest of collection metadata by a regional or state-level Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) service hub.

  • To review eligibility requirements, grant guidelines, and to download grant applications, go to http://sos.wa.gov/q/grants.
  • The application deadline is Wednesday, May 31, 2017.

Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $25,000, with a limit of $5,000 per application. It is anticipated that five (5) or more applicants may receive awards. Awards are contingent upon receipt of federal funds and distribution of those funds by WSL, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

For more information, contact Evan Robb at [email protected] or 360-704-5228.

4) ONECLICK 2017 RENEWAL

WSL announces the annual renewal for the Recorded Books OneClickdigital subscriptions. Other libraries are also welcome to join this group purchase. The subscription term for most participating libraries is April 1 through March 31. Some libraries and schools may be on a different term based on individual circumstances. There will be no price increase for public and academic libraries in 2017. K-12 libraries and school districts will receive a 10% increase over the previous year’s cost. For 2017 renewals and new subscriptions, there is a minimum charge of $181.50 for K-12 invoices.

Public and academic library subscriptions are renewed automatically unless a Cancellation Form is signed and returned prior to the end of the current subscription period. Schools and school districts are requested to send a Purchase Order (P.O.) or its equivalent to Recorded Books to renew their subscriptions. For more information, visit sos.wa.gov/q/join. Questions? Need specific pricing information? Contact Will Stuivenga at [email protected] or 360.704.5217.

5) LIBRARY 2.017 VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

“Expertise, Competencies and Careers” are the topics of discussion for the Library 2.017 web conference coming up on March 29. Brought to you by the San Jose State University School of Information in partnership with the American Library Association, this free conference is a must-attend for students and professionals alike. Participants will learn about:

  • The skills, knowledge, traits, and expectations needed to support all types and sizes of libraries and their communities in the future;
  • The competencies necessary for information professionals to deliver critical services and resources and to thrive in today’s and tomorrow’s society;
  • How library and information science schools and professional development programs can prepare library professionals for these new competencies.

Dr. Julie Todaro, ALA president, will moderate the keynote panel and will also deliver the closing keynote address. For more details, and to register for this free, 3-hour, online conference, use this shortcut link: sos.wa.gov/q/SanJose.
