I’ll have elections for 200, Sam

During his visit to Yakima Valley Community College, Secretary Reed turned into Alex Trebek and hosted what has become a tradition at YVCC — a game of Civics Jeopardy in which students are the contestants. The winner was Kanisa Regan (below), who is pursuing a business degree at the college. We have no idea who that stiff-looking guy is standing next to Kanisa!

After devoting much of April to his annual college civics tour, Secretary Reed began May by resuming the tour with a visit to Central Washington University in Ellensburg. While at Central, Reed met with students at a campus event also attended by CWU President James Gaudino and Kittitas County Auditor Jerry Pettit. Secretary Reed visits Yakima Valley College on Wednesday.

Secretary Reed is still traversing the state on his annual college civics tour to talk with students about the importance of voting and being involved with their community. While in Walla Walla Thursday, he did an interview at Whitman College’s radio station, KWCW, with student Zach Duffy (right) and Whitman College President George Bridges. Reed’s other stops that day included Columbia Basin College, Walla Walla Community College and Walla Walla University.

College civics tour, Day 7: Bellingham

Bellingham was a busy destination for Secretary Reed on his annual college civics tour. After attending events late Wednesday at Northwest Indian College and Western Washington University in B-ham, Reed began the day with visits to Bellingham Technical College and Whatcom Community College (pictured above) in the morning before heading south for stops at Pierce College in Puyallup, Green River Community College in Auburn and the University of Washington’s branch campus in Tacoma.

Party challenge to Top 2 Primary back to Supreme Court?

Washington Democrats and Libertarians are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear yet another challenge of the  state’s popular Top 2 Primary.  Various appeals have been underway since voters approved the system by a landslide eight years ago. The open primary, which allows all voters to select their favorite candidates for each office, without regard to party label,  has been successfully used since 2008, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 to allow it.  The high court did leave open…

College civics tour, Day 6: Spokane Community College

  As part of Day 6 of his 2012 College Civics Tour, Secretary Reed visited Spokane Community College, speaking to students about the importance of active civic engagement and answering their questions. Secretary Reed also visited Spokane Falls Community College and WSU Pullman earlier today, and he will visit Northwest Indian College and Western Washington University in Bellingham later this evening.

During his morning visit to Tacoma Community College, Secretary Reed and others donned fake mustaches to fit in with students there who wore Western clothing and mustache buttons saying “Voting Looks Good on You.” Reed also is visiting Bates Technical College, Clover Park Technical College, Pierce College in Steilacoom and Pacific Lutheran University on the fourth day of his annual college civics tour.

Secretary Reed is spending the second day of his annual college civics tour in King County, visiting North Seattle Community College, Shoreline CC, Edmonds CC, University of Washington Bothell/Cascadia CC and Bellevue College before heading south to Pierce County to meet with students at The Evergreen State College’s branch campus in Tacoma.
