In fact, our state has about 25 lighthouses, most of them in active service, and all serving as magnets for camera-toting, cell-phone-equipped tourists. From the Digital Archives: North Head Lighthouse photo

One of the most stunning ocean vistas along the Washington coast is found at the North Head Lighthouse near Cape Disappointment and Ilwaco, at the southwestern corner of the state. Check out this cool circa-1950 photo of the lighthouse taken just after the sun sets over the Pacific.  The photo is just one of hundreds of interesting shots taken throughout Washington that are found in the Digital Archives’ General Subjects Photograph Collection, 1845-2005.

Photo courtesy of Washington State Archives When you combine miles of coastline with occasionally stormy weather, you’re gonna have shipwrecks once in awhile.  This photo captures the Clipper ship “North Bend” when it ran aground in 1928 on Peacock Spit, near Cape Disappointment. October is Washington Archives Month, and this year’s theme is Washington’s struggles and setbacks over the years and how the people of this state have overcome them.
