Down to two for king of King

Down to two for king of King

A 16-member panel of movers and shakers, assisted by separately elected officials and a laundry list of selection criteria, have come up with two recommended finalists to be the interim King County Executive.  They are former Seattle Mayor Charles Royer and Kurt Triplett, the acting interim Executive and the immediate past chief of staff to the departed Executive Ron Sims. Yup, that’s a whole lot of work for a seat-filler job for a half-year until the voters elect a successor to Sims,…

As a newlywed from King County, I couldn’t help but take notice that King County marriage records are – for the first time –  being added to the Washington State Digital Archives, allowing couples to find their marriage info  in seconds on the Web. Starting this month, the DA began ingesting more than 1 million King County marriage records into the state’s premier electronic database. King County, one of the nation’s largest counties and home of nearly a third of the Washington electorate, has certified the results of their first countywide election since switching to all vote-by-mail. One of the outcomes was the voters picking their first directly elected elections director.  She’s Sherril Huff, who had held the post as an appointee of County Executive Ron Sims. Although both Huff and Sims are Democrats, the post is officially nonpartisan under terms of a 2008 charter…

King County’s election this week marked the debut of all vote-by-mail in the state’s largest county.  Newly elected County Elections Director Sherril Huff reports Friday that all indications are that the switch has been smooth and successful. The light turnout — 22 percent as of Friday morning — made the transition a little easier. The county still awaits federal certification of new rapid tabulation equipment that King County already has acquired. The next spring election will be on March 10. Secretary of State Sam…

I’ll Huff and puff and …

King County voters have hired the current top elections administrator, Sherril Huff, as their first popularly elected director of elections. She’s the former Kitsap County Auditor and is credited with turning around the much-criticized King County elections operation in the wake of the oh-so-close 2004 governor’s race. Huff has Democratic roots and was endorsed by Democratic County Executive Ron Sims, but under terms of a 2008 County Charter change, the newly created elections post is officially nonpartisan. King County now joins the…

KingCo voters picking new elections boss

Nearly one in three Washington voters live in King County — and for years, the state’s largest county has been the only one with an appointed, not directly elected, elections chief. In the other 38 counties, the elected County Auditor has this task. But voters changed all that with a charter amendment — and are currently balloting by mail for their very first popularly elected election director.  Tuesday, February 3, is Election Day — i.e. Deadline Day to send in those ballots. What…
