The Iditarod Sled Dog Race began in 1973 to encourage the designation of the Iditarod Trail as a National Historic Trail and bring the tradition of dogsled racing back to Alaska. The race covers 1,150 miles of the most challenging and difficult landscape Alaska has to offer.
