As I noted in a blog post last week, Washington’s one and only female Secretary of State was Belle Reeves, who was appointed in 1938 and served as Secretary of State until her death in 1948. Today, her great-great-great granddaughter, Brooke Carson, paid her first visit to the State Capitol and met the current Secretary of State, Sam Reed, in his office. Washington’s only female Secretary of State

Since March is Women’s History Month, it’s very worth mentioning Belle Reeves, the only female Secretary of State in Washington history. She was appointed Secretary of State by Governor Clarence Martin (she is seated to the left of Governor Martin in this 1938 photo, courtesy of the State Archives) in 1938 and served until 1948, when she died while serving her second full term.
