Buildings:

More than 8,000 surveys were mailed to Vashon voters this week, asking where they think the Island’s library should be.  Officials seek to outfit Vashon with a 10,000-square-foot library, which voters approved in 2004, and are today concurrently exploring two sites: K2 Commons and Ober Park.  (Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber [Vashon], 3.12.09)

Majority ruled when the Duvall City Council (King County Library System) committed $3,500 of contingency funds to a feasibility study on a new location for the Duvall Library March 12.  Results of the study will be publicly presented when it is complete.  (Valley View [Woodinville], 3.16.09)

The Ilwaco Timberland Library reopened at 158 First Ave. N., at 10 a.m. Monday, April 6. A grand opening will be held in May as part of the area’s annual Loyalty Days celebration. (Chinook Observer [Long Beach], 3.18.09)

The Vashon Library has been in the center of town for generations as a stimulating place for learning and entertainment.  I would like to see the King County Library System and Vashon Park District work out a plan that can accommodate the long term needs of our community.  Please keep the library in the present location for easy access for everyone.  (Island Beachcomber [Vashon], 3.18.09)

Economy/Hard Times:

The Othello Library board has repeatedly asked MCL to provide an accounting of the money spend for the Othello library.  So far the request has gone unanswered.  (The Outlook [Othello] 3.19.09)

South Sound residents get their second opportunity to offer their opinions on reductions in local library services.  The Timberland Regional Library system is taking public testimony on suggested budget cuts.  The district’s challenge is to cut $2.5 million from their $18.5 million budget.  (The Olympia [Olympia], 3.16.09)

Secretary of State Sam Reed visits Castle Rock library to lend support after the library narrowly lost a levy election.  The November levy received 59.55 percent approval and failed by just four votes.  (Daily News [Longview], 3.14.09)
