From Your Corner of Washington: Just where is the center?

According to at least one Web site, the geographic center of Washington is located in Chelan County, about 10 miles west-southwest of Wenatchee. However, some people in Ellensburg might beg to differ.

On the Central Washington University campus in E-burg, there is a marker indicating the “exact” spot where Washington’s geographic bull’s-eye is located. For those who want to check out the marker, it’s next to Shaw-Smyser Hall, located on North D Street, just off University Way (formerly 8th Avenue).

  1. Without even consulting the Web site mentioned I walked over to the two large Washington maps on my office wall, eyeballed the center and pinpointed with my finger. It appears to me that the only way it could be in E-burg is if you draw a latitudinal line straight east from Camas, Washington, across northern Oregon. Otherwise it’s gotta be around Mission Peak near Wenatchee. Now I’ll look at that Web site …
