Library News

The Camas City Council approved a purchase and sale agreement for a parcel of property that will eventually be used for parking for the Camas Public Library.  The city hopes to combine the lot with another adjacent parcel.  Another parcel could add up to seven additional parking spaces next to the library’s downtown facility.  (Camas-Washougal Post Record, 6.23.09)

The Ocean Shores Friends of the Library has teamed with the Grays Harbor Community Foundation, the Coastal Community Action Program, and the Columbia Pacific Resource Conservation and Economic Development District to develop and conduct a conference for the more than 700 non-profit groups in Grays Harbor.  The Non-Profit Leaders Conference for Coastal and Southwest Washington will be held October 26 and 27 at the Ocean Shores Convention Center.  It will bring grant makers to the nonprofits to meet face-to-face to discuss projects to meet the needs of their communities.  (The Daily World [Aberdeen], 6.29.09.)

Timberland Regional Library would avoid staff layoffs next year under a preliminary budget presented to its board of trustees last week, but it will buy fewer books and magazines.  (The Olympian, 6.30.09) http://www.theolympian.com/southsound/story/896633.html

Economy/Hard Times

Friends of the North Bend Library, a part of the King County Library System, normally fill more than 200 large boxes with donated books they then sell at their annual sale.  This year, the friends have noticed a drop in donations.  Instead of 200 boxes of books, the group only has 120 boxes for its August 15-29 sale.  With the slumping economy, people may be holding on to their books, instead of donating them. Buildings

The Coupeville Library, a part of Sno-Isle Libraries, is located at the Au Sable Institute for the next six to nine months due to a $2.3 million remodel and expansion project that will add 3,400 square feet to the current library.  A groundbreaking ceremony was held July 11.  (Whidbey News-Times [Oak Harbor], 7.1.09) http://www.pnwlocalnews.com/whidbey/wnt/news/49536127.html

Letters and Editorials

As an employee of the King County Library System, working at the 320th Federal Way Library, it was great to read the June 13 article by Nandell Palmer, “320th branch is a library for all seasons.”  (Federal Way Mirror, 6.27.09)

Awards
The Ellensburg Public Library will receive a $9,756 grant to expand its online digital collection of historic photographs.  The Washington State Library’s Rural Heritage Project is providing the funds. The project will focus on photographs depicting the many transportation modes that had a major impact on the growth of Kittitas County and Ellensburg, which is a major crossroad in Washington. Summer Reading

Children in Wapato put on their silliest faces, wore books on their heads, read under tables and participated in several other silly antics while being photographed as part of the Yakima Valley Libraries (YVL) “Be The Star at Your Library” event. This event kicked off YVL’s Summer Reading Program. Some of the photos from this event will be posted on the YVL website and group photos are on display at the Wapato branch library.  (Photo) (Review Independent [Toppenish & Wapato], 6.24.09) http://www.reviewindependent.com/articles/2045/1/Wapato-children-become-local-library-celebrities/Page1.html
