Library News
Volunteers at the Rainier Area Building Community are one step closer to turning the historic school house in Rainier into a true community center as the library space undergoes transformation. Timberland Regional Library (TRL) has positioned itself well fiscally for 2010 after instituting hiring freezes and reducing the use of substitutes and the hours of operation. “It looks like because of all of the cuts we made (this year), we’ll be able to get through 2010 without having to do furloughs or staff reductions,” said Jodi Reng, executive director for TRL. As unemployment numbers across King County and the rest of the country continue to rise, so is the number of people who are visiting libraries. According to a recent study conducted by Washington State Public Libraries, library attendance across the state in the latter half of 2008 was up 7.5 percent from what it was a year ago. Elections
Dayton voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to become part of the Columbia County Rural Library District. If approved, the district would assume full ownership and full financial responsibility for the library. (Tri-City Herald, 8.4.09)

Awards
A $40,000 federal grant for public libraries will give Wenatchee High School students more resources to research social studies. The one-year grant will pay for collaboration between the Wenatchee High School library and the Wenatchee Public Library, a member of the North Central Regional Library System. Summer Reading
As part of the La Conner Regional Library’s Summer Reading Program, Jennifer Bradbury, the author of a mystery novel titled Shift, told aspiring writers the road she took to become a published author, gave a short lesson on developing characters and explained the creative process behind her book. It was obvious, by watching people who attended the ice cream social outside the Peshastin Library, a member of the North Central Regional Library System, that most weren’t there just for the cold treat. The 47th annual affair, a fundraiser for the library, brought out 300 to 400 people, organizers estimated. Proceeds will go toward new sidewalks in front of the library.
