Free stuff: Archives 101

archivesIf you have interesting historical photos or records and want to know how to take care of them, check this out: The State Archives and other historical agencies are presenting “The Basics of Archives,” a series of free one-day workshops throughout Washington in October. The workshops are designed for people who work with historical records but aren’t trained archivists.

The free workshops, all from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be held on the following dates:
● Monday, October 5, at the State Archives’ Puget Sound Branch (3000 Landerholm Circle SE in Bellevue).
● Thursday, October 15, at the State Archives’ Central Branch (northwest corner of 14th and D streets in Ellensburg).
● Wednesday, October 21, at Battle Ground City Hall (109 SW 1st St. in Battle Ground).
● Thursday, October 29, at the National Archives, Pacific-Alaska Region (6125 Sand Point Way NE in Seattle).

Pre-registration is required, and enrollment is limited. The registration deadline is October 1. To per-register, contact Mark Vessey at the Heritage Resource Center at 360-586-0219 (phone), 360 586-8322 (fax) or [email protected] (e-mail).

The workshops are happening in conjunction with State Archives Month, which runs throughout October.

  1. WIll this workshop be offered on the Eastside any time soon, for instance at the beautiful facility at Cheney? (Ellensburg being Central)

I love that this is available, but it is not really free, or even an achievable goal for the smaller, poorer Eastside counties to attend when we must book a hotel room overnight in order to attend.

  2. Hi Eunice – At this time, there are no plans for a workshop in the Spokane/Cheney area. Last year, organizers planned one in Cheney at the Digital Archives, but the interest was so low for the class that they had to cancel and added another class in Western Washington, which filled up in no time. If the organizers do talk about future classes in the spring, Mark Vessey will suggest another class somewhere near the Spokane area. – Brian Zylstra.
