1) BROADBAND AND LIBRARYNET MEETINGS

LibraryNet: What’s in it for me? What’s in it for my community? The Washington library community has an unprecedented opportunity to create a LibraryNet (working title), a broadband wavelength solely for libraries.

The Washington State Library will gather public library directors, information technology staff and others involved in broadband to discuss the benefits of creating a statewide library consortium connected through a high bandwidth network. With us will be representatives of Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet) and the Pacific Northwest Gigapop, our partners in applying for broadband stimulus funds on behalf of libraries. Broadband LibraryNet meetings have been scheduled throughout the state.

We will tell you what has been done so far in the broadband arena and have open discussions about the value and uses of a network consortium dedicated to libraries in Washington. We need your input and your ideas! We know that these are busy days for all of you, but hope that you can find a day and site that will allow you to attend one of the following meetings:

  • October 8; 9:30-11:30 a.m. Everett Public Library
  • October 8; 2:30-4:30 p.m. Pierce County Library PAC in Tacoma
  • October 13; 9:00-11:00 a.m. Spokane County Library; Argonne Branch
  • October 13; 3:00-5:00 p.m. MCL Pasco Branch
  • October 15; 9:30-11:30 a.m. Longview Public Library
  • October 15; 2:00-4:00 p.m. Timberland Service Center, Tumwater
  • October 16; 12:30-2:30 p.m. KCLS Service Center Boardroom, Issaquah

A virtual meeting may also be planned but our preference is to see you at the face-to-face meetings. So that we know how many will be attending, please register at: www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/librarynet.

2) THE LAST GREAT RACE – IDITAROD OCT 15

Featuring Laura Daugereau, Washington State’s first female competitor. The Iditarod Sled Dog Race began in 1973 to encourage the designation of the Iditarod Trail as a National Historic Trail and bring the tradition of dogsled racing back to Alaska. The race covers 1,150 miles of the most challenging and difficult landscape Alaska has to offer. Mushers and their dogs go against blizzards, high winds, below-zero temperatures, and complete solitude. They must be able to care for their dogs’ safety as well as their own.

For as long as she can remember, Laura Daugereau from Port Gamble, Washington, has loved the outdoors. Laura was 10 when she read a book about mushing and a passion was born. She trains her own dogs and is very proud of the awards she’s received for the best-kept team. Laura trains for the Iditarod during the race season on a ranch in Montana with fellow musher Rick Larson and his wife Sandy. Laura is currently training for the 2011 Iditarod race.

Join us at the Washington State Library as Laura shares her stories of the trail, and meet one of her dogs: Thursday, October 15, 2009 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. 6880 Capitol Boulevard South, Tumwater, Washington. For more information about this or other free events at the Washington State Library contact: WSL events at 360.704.5269 or [email protected].

4) HISTORICAL AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY, AND FISHERIES LITERATURE

The University of Washington Libraries has recently completed a project to identify and preserve the most important early Washington State agriculture, forestry, and fisheries literature in cooperation with Cornell University, Washington State University, and other institutions. The project produced comprehensive bibliographies of Washington State agriculture, forestry, and fisheries books and journals published between 1820 and 1945 (2,323 entries).

A panel of ten scholars and subject experts then ranked the titles on the bibliographies by their importance for preservation. 129 of the titles (315,000+ pages) ranked most important by the panel were preserved on microfilm. Titles include Pacific Fisherman, Timberman, Better Fruit, and Washington Farmer. Microfilm from the project will also be used to digitize portions of Ranch and Pacific Fisherman as part of other grant projects.

To access the bibliographies, and for additional information about the project, including credits and funding, visit www.lib.washington.edu/preservation/projects/washag/.
