1) THE FEMINIST BROADSIDE WITH ARTISTS O’LEARY AND SPRING

Come join the Washington State Library as we celebrate the centennial of women’s suffrage in Washington State with letterpress artists Jessica Spring and Chandler O’Leary. They have collaborated on a feminist broadside series celebrating distinguished women of the suffrage movement such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Tubman and Alice Paul. Jessica and Chandler’s striking and vivid letterpress pieces evoke the strength and passion of these influential figures who struggled for basic civil and human rights in American history.

Chandler’s work includes artist books, illustrations, graphic design, textiles, letterpress printing, and drawing. Her books and prints are collected and exhibited internationally. Chandler lives and creates art full-time in Tacoma, Washington where she is proprietor of Anagram Press. She is active in the local arts community there and is also a board member of the Book Arts Guild of Seattle.

Jessica, also from Tacoma, is proprietor of Springtide Press where she currently designs, prints and binds unique artist books, broadsides and ephemera incorporating handmade paper and letterpress printing. The Press provides workshops as well as equipment rental, photopolymer platemaking, and letterpress printing, and also maintains a large collection of vintage foundry type, printing presses, and vintage bindery equipment, most of which are well over 100 years old. Visitors are welcome by appointment and workshops are available to interested groups.

Wednesday, February 10, 2010, 6:30 p.m.; doors open at 6:00 p.m. The Washington State Library is located at 6880 Capitol Blvd. SE, Tumwater, WA. If you have any questions please email or call WSL Events: [email protected] 360-704-5260.

2) FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY – SERVICES TO OLDER ADULTS

The California State Library, Idaho Commission for Libraries, Oregon State Library, and Washington State Library are pleased to announce a year-long fellowship opportunity funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute for Museum and Library Services, Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program.

This year-long fellowship will provide continuing education scholarships for selected public library staff and professionals who wish to advance their library and information science skills related to improving services to and engagement with active, older adults. Up to 25 applicants from Washington State will be selected to participate. Fellows will be introduced to a new framework for serving and engaging adults ages 50+ that both promotes productive aging and establishes libraries as centers of lifelong learning and civic engagement.

3) VALUE OF LIBRARIES SURVEY

OCLC needs help in understanding the types of assistance public libraries provide to users today. Please share your public library’s role in supporting patrons with such activities as job seeking, small business support, technology training and in providing meeting room facilities by taking this quick six- question OCLC survey available at www.oclc.org/info/ValueOfLibrariesSurvey. The survey will be available until Monday, February 1.
