1) WASHINGTON HISTORIC NEWSPAPERS ONLINE – 8 NEW TITLES

More than 42,000 historic newspaper pages from 8 Washington newspapers were contributed by the Washington State Library to the Chronicling America web site, hosted by the Library of Congress. The site provides free and open access to over 1.7 million pages from 212 titles that were published between 1880 and 1922 in 15 states and the District of Columbia.

3) FREE WEBINAR – COPYRIGHT UPDATE 2010

This Infopeople webinar will be of interest to library staff who confront copyright issues as they design web pages, and make digital copies for interlibrary loan and e-reserves, but fear receiving copyright infringement notices. The speaker is Mary Minow, an attorney, consultant, and a former librarian and library trustee who teaches digital copyright at San Jose State School of Library Science and at Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Put this webinar on your schedule if you would like to:

  • Get updates on new copyright tools and best practices that can be helpful for libraries;
  • Learn the latest developments in copyright laws and cases, including the latest in the Google Book Search case, e-reserve and coursepack lawsuits;

4) LIS ONLINE CAREER FAIR

Are you newly graduated from library school or mid-career and looking for a change? Are you wondering how to improve your career skills or ready to try a certificate program? Looking to refresh your resume? Alliance Library System and TAP Information Services invite you to the first annual LIS Online Career Fair.

The conference keynote speaker is Rachel Singer Gordon, webmaster of lisjobs.com, the largest library career site and job database, and consulting editor at Information Today Inc., Books Division. Rachel’s talk, “Career Building in a Down Economy,” will help librarians focus on what they can do to keep themselves moving forward professionally in a down economy. There will be a variety of other speakers and programs.

5) GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR LIBRARIES AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS

The National Park Service is administering the Tribal Preservation Program to preserve, protect, and promote the unique cultural traditions and historic properties of Indian tribes, strengthening their capabilities for operating sustainable preservation programs. Eligible projects include the preservation of oral histories, cultural traditions and historical places. Highest priority is given to projects that provide training and focus on a lasting impact. The application deadline is February 5, 2010, and funds generally do not exceed $40,000. For application materials, visit www.nps.gov/history/hps/tribal/grants.htm.

The LEGO Children’s Fund is providing grants to nonprofit organizations that offer programs and projects that allow children to explore personal creativity and creative problem-solving. Early childhood education and development and technology and communication projects that advance learning opportunities are among the primary areas of support. Grants generally range from $500 to $5,000. Requests are reviewed quarterly, and the next deadline is February 2, 2010. For more information, visit www.legochildrensfund.org/mission.html.

The deadline for the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ National Leadership Grants is February 1, 2010. The grant funds projects with national impact that have the potential to elevate museum and library practice in their preservation of culture, heritage and knowledge while enhancing learning. Challenge Grants in United States History and Culture applications are due February 3, 2010. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the grant will offer matching funds to institutions wishing to explore significant themes and events in American history.
