1) OCLC DOWNLOADABLE AUDIOBOOKS TRAINING

Now that most OCLC NetLibrary Recorded Books collections are live and available to libraries and their patrons, the next big step is training for library staff who will be working with these collections. We are pleased to announce an extensive schedule of both online and on-site training classes. All sessions are free to staff in libraries that are subscribing to one or more OCLC NetLibrary Recorded Books collections.

First up are “e-Audiobooks Overview” webinars: an online introduction that includes getting started, a demonstration, and essential resources to help your patrons use eAudiobooks with the Media Center (OneClick) and the NetLibrary website. Intended audience: All library staff with patron interactions. Length: 60 minutes; 10 sessions are offered from March 15 through April 15.

Intensive, hands-on, in-depth workshops will be offered in four locations around the state:

  • Mon. March 29 – Spokane Public Library
  • Tues. March 30 – Richland Public Library
  • Wed. March 31 – Camas Public Library (held in the Camas City Hall building)
  • Friday, April 2 – Burlington Public Library

These sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and will include hands-on practice in downloading audiobooks to portable devices, plus sessions on setup and administration, marketing & promotion, and more. Anyone traveling more than 50 miles to one of these sessions may file for mileage expense reimbursement.

Finally, key components of the in-person sessions will also be offered multiple times as three separate online webinars, with dates ranging from March 23 through April 15. For more information and scheduling, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/eAudiobookTraining. For the complete WSL training calendar and to register, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/training.

2) 2010 RENEW WASHINGTON GRANT CYCLE NOW OPEN

The Renew Washington grant cycle for 2010 from the Washington State Library opened on March 8th. The purpose of this grant cycle is to provide grant funds to help libraries respond to people who need access to employment-related information, resources and services within their library. Libraries may do this by providing training, additional computer workstations, and other resources to improve the capacity of Washington library staff to meet the needs of customers who are seeking assistance from their local libraries because of the recession.

$200,000 in grant funds has been allocated and grants up to $25,000 will be awarded. For additional information visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/grants. Questions? Contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected].

6) ARE YOU UPNEXT?

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) invites you to help invent the future of museums and libraries through your participation in UpNext: The Future of Museums and Libraries Wiki. IMLS’s first-ever wiki is a platform where individuals inside and outside of museums, libraries, and related fields can discuss, dissect, expand, and inform issues important to the future of these institutions. IMLS will use the knowledge shared in the wiki to help shape the agency’s strategic plan, research directions, publications, convenings, and grant making. The wiki was officially launched March 3.

Nine discussion themes and one theme on next steps will each be featured on the wiki for a two-week period, introduced by expert discussion leaders. The themes and leaders for March include:

  • March 3-16:

1. Changing Definitions & Roles of Museums and Libraries with Martín Gómez, City Librarian, Los Angeles Public Library

2. Shifts in Power & Authority with Cassie Chin, Deputy Executive Director, Wing Luke Asian Museum

  • March 17-30:

3. Museums & Libraries as the “Third Place” with Susan Hildreth, City Librarian, Seattle Public Library

4. Technology & Policy Development with John Wilkin, Associate University Librarian for Library Information Technology (LIT), University of Michigan, Executive Director of HathiTrust

Visit the UpNext wiki at imlsupnext.wikispaces.com. A discussion guide for the wiki topics is available at www.imls.gov/pdf/DiscussionGuide.pdf. For a press release providing a complete listing of topics and facilitators, contact information, and more, visit www.imls.gov/news/2010/022410.shtm.
