Are you ready for some football?!

Photo courtesy of Washington State Archives

In honor of the Packers-Steelers Super Bowl this Sunday, we asked the State Archives folks to find some cool, historic football-related photos.

This one stands out. Taken on December 29, 1969, it shows Governor Dan Evans holding up the ball for his son to kick on the front lawn of the Governor’s Mansion. The Temple of Justice is in the background. The photo is from the State Governors’ Negative Collection, 1949-1975.

On a related note, an unscientific poll taken this week reveals that most people in this office want the Packers to win.

  1. The young man pictured with Governor Evans is Dan jr.who later played end and placekicker for the Charles Wright Academy.

  2. Thats an awesome archive picture, I always love seeing old state pictures like this, nice find!

As for the Superbowl, I’m with Patrick, can’t be bothered to care who wins. It’s indeed remarkable how quickly the interest wanes once your team is out.

  3. Dan Evans was the only Washington governor to serve three consecutive terms and later served as senator. He was considered for the Republican VP ticket a couple of times. Dan Jr. has been very successful as well. It’s not too often that a father and son get to play ball at the governor’s mansion. I’m sure they have enjoyed seeing it on this site.
