1) CONNECTING GRANT CYCLE NOW OPEN

The purpose of the Connecting Libraries through Resource Sharing (CLRS) grant cycle is to provide grant funds for collection development with materials that are rotated between partnering libraries, thus encouraging cooperation among public libraries in counties where inter-local agreements to share materials do not exist.

Grants of up to $715 per library may be awarded to public libraries within counties that do not currently provide county-wide library service and that do not have formal inter-local agreements in place. A single application from each group of partnering libraries is required. A partnership must include two or more public libraries; one library will act as the lead library in both the application process and, if awarded, the grant implementation.

The application deadline is Friday, April 29, 2011. Anyone having questions about this grant cycle may join an online Elluminate session on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. The session link is www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/connecting. More details may be found at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/grants or contact Carolyn Petersen, CLRS Project Manager, at 360.570.5560 or [email protected].

2) ASSIST IN SELECTING DATABASE PRODUCTS FOR WA LIBRARIES

The Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) project requests your assistance in helping to determine which products will be subsidized for Washington libraries over the next several years. We are currently in the middle of a formal procurement and bidding process to make these decisions.

Vendors proposed products in one or more of these categories:

  • General periodical collections providing full text in a wide array of topics (4 proposals received);
  • Full-text newspaper collections featuring both Washington and national papers (3 proposals received);
  • Resources for children and students, with a focus on products aimed at the younger researcher (6 proposals received but most include more than one product).

There are two ways to assist in this process:

  1. Review database products in one or more of the categories listed above;
  2. Score the written vendor proposals in one or more categories.

This work will need to be completed by March 31, 2011. To volunteer, or to ask a question, please send e-mail to Will Stuivenga at [email protected]. Please indicate which category or categories you are interested in reviewing. For more information on this procurement process, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/SDL. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

3) SEQUIM GAZETTE MICROFILM AVAILABLE

The Washington State Library routinely microfilms Washington newspapers as part of its mission to preserve and make accessible materials on the history and culture of the state. The following is WSL’s most recently microfilmed newspaper title:

  • Sequim Gazette (Sequim, WA); Jan 2, 2008-Dec 30, 2009; (12 reels total).

These reels are available to be viewed here at the Washington State Library or borrowed via Interlibrary Loan. To purchase a duplicate reel, please contact Leslie Boyter at [email protected].

4) APRIL IS THE MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD

April was designated as the "Month of the Military Child” in 1986. Since that time, the Army has annually celebrated the significant contributions and sacrifices made by our children and youth. Many responsibilities, once handled by the deployed soldier, now fall on the spouse and children left at home. In recognition of the support our children provide to their soldier-parents, the past Secretary of the Army, Pete Geren, has declared them to be “everyday heroes.”

Army installations world-wide and State/Territory Joint Forces Headquarters will hold special events in April such as parades, fairs, and carnivals as visible demonstrations of support to our children for their courage and sacrifices. Your support is welcomed in this effort and whatever you can do to recognize our military students is truly appreciated.

Print or order a poster promoting public awareness and strengthening support of military children in your community. Downloadable posters are available via these shortcut links:

Please contact Robbin Seeberger, State Youth Coordinator, at 253-512-7985 or [email protected] for any of the following:

  • Poster size copies of the two attached documents;
  • Military youth resources (brochures, coloring books, bookmarks);
  • A copy of the Kissing Hand Storybook with an activity guide.
