1) WASHINGTON NEWSPAPERS ON MICROFILM

The Washington State Library routinely microfilms Washington newspapers as part of its mission to preserve and make accessible materials on the history and culture of the state. The following is a list of WSL’s most recently microfilmed newspaper titles:

  • Snoqualmie Valley Newspapers Assortment #1 –

Contains North Bend Post and Snoqualmie Post issues: October 31, 1913 – November 16, 1917

  • Snoqualmie Valley Newspapers Assortment #2 –

Contains Valley Record, Snoqualmie Valley Record, and Snoqualmie Valley Record combined with Snoqualmie Post issues: April 3, 1924 – July 23, 1925

2) GET READY FOR COMMUNITY READS

Need new ideas for your community read? Hear how schools and libraries celebrate reading and the life of the mind at the June 7, 2011, First Tuesdays presentation from the Washington State Library.

  • Port Townsend Public Library Director, Theresa Percy, will talk about how she and her staff plan a myriad of programs for their town.
  • North Thurston Public Schools Director of Community Relations, Courtney Schrieve, will talk about what’s necessary to produce a district-wide community read.
  • Gwendolyn Haley, Youth Services Manager at the North Spokane branch of the Spokane County Library District, will discuss what it takes to bring multiple libraries and community organizations together for a county-wide reading program.

3) COME TO THE EARLY LEARNING EXCHANGE

Do you care about early learning? Would you like to network with education leaders, community advocates, and colleagues who have a passion for early learning? If the answer is “Yes” to any of these questions, sign up now for Connect the Dots: An Early Learning Exchange. The Foundation for Early Learning, with the support of the Seattle Public Libraries and the Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP), will be holding this cutting-edge event using a high-paced format similar to the popular TED lecture series. Speakers will give presentations ranging from 12 – 18 minutes in length on various topics related to early learning. The conference will bring together unique perspectives and encourage networking between speakers and attendees.

Emceed by Enrique Cerna, host and executive producer of the weekly news program KCTS 9 Connects, presenters will include:

  • Dr. Dimitri Christakis, Pediatrician and Researcher with Seattle Children’s Hospital;
  • Dr. Bette Hyde, Director of the Washington Department of Early Learning;
  • Kristie Kirkpatrick, Director of the Whitman County Library, and founding member of the ELPLP;
  • Val Thomas-Matson, founder of the children’s TV program, Look, Listen and Learn.

WALE will be celebrating 20 years of conferences this fall with Roaring Twenties – Share the Experience. As part of the celebration, the conference planning committee has set a goal to assemble WALE’s story in scrapbooks that will be shared digitally at the 2011 WALE Conference.
