1) RECORDED BOOKS ISSUES NETLIBRARY INVOICES

Recorded Books is handling the NetLibrary eAudiobook renewal invoices this year. Libraries purchasing subscriptions to one or more of the NetLibrary downloadable audiobook collections through the WSL project should expect to receive an invoice from Recorded Books. These invoices are in process now, so your school or library may have already received one, or it may be coming soon.

Although EBSCO now owns NetLibrary (having purchased it from OCLC), most of the content comes from Recorded Books. Consequently, this year EBSCO handed off the entire task of coordinating the subscription renewals, including the invoicing, to Recorded Books.

Both firms are planning significant platform changes in the near future. EBSCO will be migrating NetLibrary content to the EBSCOHost platform, and Recorded Books is launching its own platform. Both platforms will offer eBook content as well as eAudiobook formats. There will be additional news regarding these changes, and what they mean for the statewide project coming soon, so stay tuned.

2) FREE WORKSHOP – PROTECTING CULTURAL COLLECTIONS

Registration is now open for a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop offered by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States. This 2-part training is free to participants, who will:

  • Complete an institutional disaster plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
  • Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
  • Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
  • Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
  • Have hands-on practice in salvage procedures for books, documents, and non-print media.

 Workshop information:

  • Part 1: Friday, July 8, 2011, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Part 2: Friday, August 19, 2011, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Location: Everett Public Library, Everett

3) STARTING STRONG INSTITUTE

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Department of Early Learning, Thrive by Five Washington, and Northeast ESD #101 are excited to announce the Third Annual Starting Strong Institute. Each year, Starting Strong brings together parents, providers, preschool teachers, kindergarten teachers, and educational leaders to continue the dialogue about enhancing learning and transitions from prekindergarten through Grade 3. Starting Strong will offer participants examples and strategies on how to engage other early learning partners, align instruction and standards for learning across systems, and build smooth transitions for families and for children as they enter kindergarten and the K-12 system.

  • Day 1: Thursday, August 11, 2011, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Day 2: Friday, August 12, 2011, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Location: Spokane Convention Center, Spokane
