2) SDL CHOOSES PROQUEST AGAIN

The Washington State Library, and the Statewide Database Licensing Project, and its Advisory Committee are pleased to announce that ProQuest has again been selected to provide a suite of database products to the nonprofit libraries of Washington State. The package will include a periodicals collection, a collection of Washington and national newspapers, and a collection of resources for children and students.

Contract negotiations with ProQuest are currently underway with the goal of providing a seamless transition to the new, slightly revised package of database content that ProQuest is offering to libraries in Washington. Pricing for individual libraries is not anticipated to increase, but uncertainty about the LSTA funds that Washington State will receive under the newly adopted U.S. budget makes exact predictions difficult.

All currently participating libraries are requested to fill out and return an “Intent to Participate” form, which can be found on the project web site: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/SDL. For questions, please contact SDL Project Manager, Will Stuivenga, at [email protected] or 360-704-5217 or toll- free: 866-538-4996.

3) MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

Each year, the month of May is set aside to recognize the value of older Americans to our society. The theme this year, “Older Americans: Connecting the Community,” reminds us that age has no bounds when it comes to enriching lives and contributing to our country. Take a moment to explore the following resources:

  • Celebrate the Month with promotional materials, available at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/AOA, from the Administration on Aging.
  • Transforming Life after 50 (TLA50) is an initiative that is enhancing public library services and programs for members of the community who are over 50. Find out more at transforminglifeafter50.org.
  • Many older adults are no longer able to read standard print books due to vision problems or physical barriers. Be it macular degeneration; glaucoma; diabetic retinopathy; or other vision problems, or severe arthritis; MS; Parkinson’s; or other conditions that make it difficult or impossible to hold a book or turn its pages, the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library provides a world of information for free to those who are eligible for its many services. For more information go to www.wtbbl.org.
  • The Administration on Aging of the United States Department of Health and Human Services has made available a number of resources aimed at the needs of older Americans, including information on emergency preparedness and response. Be prepared for the arrival of summer weather with “Tips for Preventing Illness During Hot Weather” and “Heat Stress and the Elderly” by going to: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/Heat.

4) TRANSFORMING OUR IMAGE

When PLA hosted the first “Transforming Our Image” webinar in November 2010, it was a huge hit. Join Valerie Gross once more for an updated and extended version of this successful program. At the conclusion of the webinar, you will have gained the skills and confidence to:

  • Redefine libraries in a new, innovative way;
  • Align your library with what the community values most: education;
  • Heighten your library’s visibility and stature;
  • Develop strategies that you can integrate immediately into your work;
  • Introduce the philosophy and strategic vocabulary concepts to staff, Board, elected officials, Friends/Foundation Board, customers, community, and the media.

Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. PDT. Participants must register before 2:30 p.m. PDT on Monday, May 16, 2011. For additional information and to register, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/Transform.
