1) FIRST TUESDAYS – CONNECTING WITH YOUR COMMUNITY

Want to know the secrets behind the Seattle Public Library’s 10,000+ fans on Facebook? Three staff members from the library’s social media team will describe how they developed a robust Facebook presence and will provide practical tips for libraries of all sizes. Get ideas for how you can engage with your community and thrive on Facebook.

Connecting with Your Community via Facebook: They Already Like You! is the topic for the January 10, 2012, First Tuesdays program from the Washington State Library. Caroline Ullman, Toby Thomas, and Jennifer Robinson, from the Seattle Public Library, will present.

Designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, First Tuesdays is a free, online, monthly presentation from the Washington State Library, held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. usually on the first Tuesday of each month. 2) SEEKING FINAL COMMENTS ON EARLY LEARNING GUIDELINES

The committee overseeing the redesign of the Washington State Early Learning and Development Guidelines, has kicked off their third and final round of outreach on the draft Guidelines. The many comments received during the first two rounds of outreach have helped in the refinement of the current draft. This is your opportunity to review the final draft and to offer any other guidance that the redesign committee should consider prior to finalizing the document. It is important to note that this is a living document, subject to review and updating every five years. Advice from those who use the Guidelines will continue to be compiled and considered for future revisions.

Final comments on the draft of the Washington State Early Learning and Development Guidelines are due no later than Friday, January 13, 2012. To view the final draft of the Guidelines and to provide your input, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/ELGDraft.

3) GRANTS FOR NATIVE AMERICAN LIBRARY SERVICES

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is now accepting applications for Native American Library Services Basic Grants. These grants are noncompetitive and are distributed in equal amounts among eligible applicants. The purpose of the Basic Grants is:

  • To support existing library operations;
  • To maintain core library services.

The Education/Assessment Option, supplemental to the Basic Grants, is also noncompetitive and must be requested. The Option provides funding that may be used:

  • For library staff to attend continuing education courses and training workshops on- or off-site;
  • For library staff to attend or give presentations at conferences related to library services;
  • To hire a consultant for an on-site professional library assessment.

Indian tribes, regional corporations, and village corporations are eligible to apply. Entities such as libraries, schools, tribal colleges, or departments of education are not eligible applicants, although they may be involved in the administration of this program and their staff may serve as project directors, in partnership with an eligible applicant. Two pre-application webinars, which will enable potential applicants to learn more about the program, ask questions, and listen to the questions and comments of other participants, will be held on two successive Tuesdays, January 17 and 24, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. PST.

4) REWARDING EXCELLENCE IN YOUTH-FOCUSED PROGRAMS

The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is pleased to invite applications for the 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards. Formerly known as the Coming Up Taller Awards, they are the Nation’s highest honor for out-of-school arts and humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of America’s young people, particularly those from underserved communities. They recognize and support excellence in programs that open new pathways to learning, self-discovery, and achievement.

Each year, the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards recognize 12 outstanding programs in the United States, from a wide range of urban and rural settings. Each winner will receive:

  • $10,000;
  • An invitation to the White House awards ceremony;
  • An award plaque;
  • An opportunity to attend the Annual Awardee Conference in Washington, DC;
  • Exposure by being featured on the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award website.

After-school and out-of-school time arts and humanities programs sponsored by museums, libraries, performing arts organizations, educational institutions, arts centers, community service organizations, businesses, and eligible government entities are encouraged to apply. 5) DOING MORE WITH LESS

With the current economic downturn, many cataloging departments have experienced, or are facing, staff reductions. With fewer catalogers around to process materials, those departments have to come up with ways to deal with the situation. Some have struggled while others have been more successful. Some have even managed to do more with less.

The Association for Library Collection & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of ALA, will be holding a two-day e-Forum, The Incredible Shrinking Cataloging Department: How to Do More with Less, an open discussion about options, choices, and strategies used in various cataloging departments. Participants will be invited to share their own ideas and solutions. Topics to be covered include:

  • Outsourcing options;
  • Cooperative cataloging exchanges between libraries;
  • Managing foreign language materials;
  • Improving efficiencies in cataloging workflow;
  • Stopping tasks that are less value-added.
