1) 2012 LSTA GRANT CYCLES OPENING THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 2012

The Washington State Library is pleased to announce the opening of two grant cycles:

  • 2012 Transforming Life After 50 (TLA50): The TLA50 initiative is designed to help libraries better serve and engage midlife adults by positioning libraries as catalysts, resources, meeting places, and partners in creating opportunities for midlife adults to learn, teach, lead, build skills, re-career, and become civically-engaged. Academic, public and tribal libraries that serve adults over the age of 50 are eligible to apply. A total of $30,000 in LSTA funds is available to award six (6) grants up to $5,000 each;
  • 2012 Washington Rural Heritage: Washington Rural Heritage is a statewide digitization initiative for small rural libraries and tribal libraries. To date, more than 60 cultural institutions (including 26 public libraries) throughout Washington have contributed to this growing digital collection of historic primary sources. Learn more about the project and see a full list of contributors by visiting: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WRH. Both public and tribal libraries are eligible to apply for this grant. A total of $50,000 in LSTA funds is available to award five (5) or more grants up to $10,000 each.

2) FIRST TUESDAYS – READERS’ ADVISORY ON FACEBOOK

Everyone, from hobbyists to small businesses, seems to be on Facebook. Libraries are there as well, delivering traditional services in new ways. Readers’ Advisory on Facebook is the topic for the March 6, 2012, First Tuesdays program from the Washington State Library. Alison Kastner, from Multnomah County Library will report on what transpired when she and a team of her colleagues decided to use Facebook to answer Readers’ Advisory questions.

Designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, First Tuesdays is a free, online, monthly presentation from the Washington State Library, held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. To join the presentation, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays.

3) FREE WEBINAR – EARLY BILINGUAL LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

We know that the best time to learn a second language in life is to start as a baby, but what is it about the brain that makes that happen? New studies are uncovering details on how experiences early in life literally shape babies’ brain and language development, and relate to other cognitive capacities. Whether learning one language or three, research findings can be applied to support all children’s learning starting from their first relationships and the quality of their interactions with adults in the first years of life.

Highlighting current best evidence on early bilingual language development, key findings from early childhood bilingual brain research, and connections between executive function and bilingualism in young children, “Early Bilingual Experience and its Relationship to Language and Cognitive Development,” presented by Dr. Gina Lebedeva, will support participants’ abilities to:

  • Articulate the importance of first relationships and how early literacy experiences shape babies’ brain and language development;
  • Identify differences and similarities between monolingual and bilingual infant language development;
  • Generate specific strategies to improve interactions at home and in classrooms to support early communication;
  • Deepen awareness of how basic brain and behavioral research on infants and young children can influence the quality of their experiences.

Workshop information:

  • When: Friday, March 9, 2012, 1:15 – 3:30 p.m. PST;
  • Part of the Washington State University Extension Parenting Education Webinar Series, Professional Development for Parenting Educators;
  • Registration: Free, but registration is required. To register, go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/ParentingMar9Webinar;

5) WHAT DO TEENS WANT?

Libraries can be a tremendous resource for teens, helping them to learn about themselves and the world they live in. Does your work in the library include service to teens? Do you want to increase your confidence and competence in providing fundamental teen services?

Librarian and author Sarah Flowers will share resources, experiences, and ideas for working with this energetic and enthusiastic age group. By attending this 4-week online Infopeople course, participants will be equipped to:

  • Find out what teens read, listen to, and watch, and be able to guide them to “something good to read;”
  • Help teens meet their homework or other information needs;
  • Navigate issues connected with access, privacy, challenges to materials, and Internet use.

Course information:

  • Tuesday, March 6, 2012 – Monday, April 2, 2012;
