1) FINDING FUNDING TO ENHANCE COLLECTION CARE

Do you need a preservation grant to take care of your collections? Many institutions have used grant-funded projects to enhance the level of care they can provide for their collections, and sometimes even to jump start their preservation programs.

Creating and Funding Preservation Projects to Enhance Collection Care is a one-day workshop from the Western States & Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS) that begins by identifying and prioritizing collection needs, followed by reviewing sources of available grant funding. The third part of the workshop addresses the key preservation questions asked on grant applications, showing participants how to answer the questions on behalf of their institutions. The workshop emphasizes working collaboratively with colleagues to develop and receive feedback on project proposals.

2) DUAL LANGUAGES – EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

Want to hear about the latest research and innovative practices in early learning? The Distinguished Lecture Series, Quality Teaching & Learning for Young Children, co-sponsored by the University of Washington’s College of Education and the National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning, features nationally recognized early childhood researchers and leaders who share their expertise and passion. Each session is followed by a question and answer session. And, best of all, all events are free and open to the public! The next lecture, “Dual Languages: Designing Effective Instruction for Young Children of Diverse Backgrounds: What Works and Why,” will feature Dr. Linda Espinosa, from the University of Missouri, who will share her latest research on this topic.

3) COURSE IN BOOK REPAIR AT HIGHLINE

Would you like to get more “mileage” out of your circulating collections? By repairing, rather than replacing, you can save valuable collection dollars for new titles. Sign up today for the 3-credit, hands-on course, “Book Repair” at Highline Community College, and learn how to do basic repairs including:

  • Mending spines, hinges, and corners;
  • Recasing;
  • Attaching new end-sheets;
  • Making three different types of paper repairs;
  • Repairing a paperback without the use of tape.

  • When: Class runs from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on 6 successive Saturdays, beginning June 30, 2012 and ending August 4, 2012;

4) AWARDS FOR COLLABORATIONS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Every two years, the Gale/Library Media Connection TEAMS Award recognizes and encourages critical collaborations between teachers and media specialists to promote learning and increase student achievement. Nominations are now being accepted for programs that demonstrate:

  • Collaboration between media specialists and teachers during a school year;
  • Effective techniques that positively impact student learning and achievement;
  • Support received from school leadership;
  • The ability for others to replicate this best practice.

Examples of eligible collaborations include:

  • Using large-print books to improve student reading scores;
  • Increasing literacy among struggling readers;
  • Improving information literacy;
  • Using nonfiction materials in classroom libraries to support reading;
  • Integrating electronic and print reference resources into classroom learning.

Three winners will receive:

  • $2,500 cash award;
  • Gale products worth approximately $500;
  • A one-year subscription to Library Media Connection;
  • An Educator’s Professional Bookshelf, worth approximately $500, from Linworth Publishing.
