A history of roads and pioneer trails and the Pacific Northwest was the runaway winner in September’s “Library jewels” online poll. Two of the photos from that collection are featured here. Above is a 1915 photo of Gov. Ernest Lister’s dedication of the new road crossing over Snoqualmie Pass. Below is a mid-1960s photo showing the Old Preston Hotel between Preston and Fall City.

The roads/trails history received 58 percent of the votes, easily surpassing the 1814 book on British possessions in North America (30 percent) and a poem about former Washington Territory Gov. Isaac Stevens that was written after his death in the Civil War (12 percent).

A new month means a new set of interesting or rare State Library items to showcase in the next online poll in late October. But first we’ll feature the October edition “Archives treasures” and launch an online poll on three items found in the State Archives.
