1) FIRST TUESDAYS – BENEFITS OF COLLABORATION AND COOPERATION

What happens when librarians and discipline faculty work together to teach information literacy skills to students? Find out at the next First Tuesdays program, when Lynn Kanne, project coordinator for Library as Instructional Leader, a multi-year research project involving over 40 faculty and about 2,000 students, discusses the following assumptions that guided the project design:

  • Information literacy is an accepted learning outcome;
  • The library can make a contribution to achieving information literacy;
  • Achievement of information literacy needs to start in developmental education (pre-college) programs;
  • Collaborative efforts in which librarians and faculty in developmental education work together are a viable way to achieve information literacy.

This free online webinar will take place on March 5, 2013, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PST. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays.

3) 2013 LSTA GRANT CYCLES OPEN MARCH 1

The Washington State Library is pleased to announce the opening of two grant cycles:

  • 2013 Washington Rural Heritage (WRH): WRH is an initiative that supports small and rural libraries in the development of digital projects that serve historically unique items and collections online. The purpose of this grant cycle is to provide grant funds to small and rural, public and tribal libraries to encourage the development of long-term sustainable digitization programs through the creation of a digital collection published as part of the larger WRH collection. Learn more about the project and see a full list of contributors by visiting www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WRH. Both public and tribal libraries are eligible to apply for this grant. A total of $50,000 in LSTA funds is available to award 5 or more grants up to $10,000 each. Application deadline is Friday, May 3, 2013;
  • 2013 Broadband: The purpose of the Broadband grant cycle is to provide funds for public and tribal libraries to upgrade and/or add network hardware and software to take advantage of significantly enhanced broadband connectivity. Preference will be given to those libraries participating in a Round One or Two ARRA Broadband (NTIA BTOP) grants awarded to the Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet). Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $150,000 with a limit of $10,000 per library system. It is anticipated that 15 or more applicants may receive awards. Application deadline is Friday, April 12, 2013.

4) WSL OFFERS LSSC ASSISTANCE AWARDS

The Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) Program, funded by a grant to ALA from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and managed by the ALA-Allied Professional Association, offers library employees a new career path in the library profession and the opportunity to achieve recognition for their experience, enhance library service, and increase skills and knowledge in areas such as foundations of librarianship, technology, and communication.

This spring, the Washington State Library (WSL) will be offering 4 Enrollment Assistance Awards (EAA), in the amount of $175, to library support staff who are applying for certification in the LSSC Program. The awards cover half of the LSSC enrollment fee; successful award recipients will be required to pay the other half. For additional information about the LSSC Program, visit www.ala-apa.org/lssc. For more information about the EAA and to apply, go to www.sos.wa.gov/library/libraries/training/raa.aspx. Questions? Contact Jennifer Fenton at [email protected] or 360.570.5571.
