1) THE NEW LIBRARY TRUSTEE MANUAL

Next week, the Washington State Library will provide a sneak preview of the revised trustee manual for public libraries – now online with hyperlinks to all the resources you need. Find answers to the following questions, and more:

  • What exactly is an Optional Municipal Code City?
  • Where can I find a plain-English explanation of property taxes in Washington State?
  • What is “OPMA” and why should I care?
  • Where can I go for help?

The new online format allows users to connect to RCWs, WACs, Articles of the State Constitution, Attorney General Opinions, and more, as well as resources from a wide variety of organizations and agencies that provide additional clarification and guidance at the click of a mouse or a tap on a touch screen.

Come to the sneak preview of the wiki and see how easy it will be to connect to the information you need. Two sessions of this online presentation, sponsored by Washington Library Friends, Foundations, Trustees & Advocates (WLFFTA), an interest group of the Washington Library Association, will be offered.

2) FIDUCIARY DUTIES? COME TO FIRST TUESDAYS

Do you serve on the board of a Washington nonprofit such as a public library? Do you know what your fiduciary responsibilities are? Find out more at the next First Tuesdays program where Lorri Ann Dunsmore of Perkins Coie will speak about The Fiduciary Duties of Nonprofit Board Members.

This free online webinar will take place on May 7, 2013, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays.

3) CONTINUING EDUCATION NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEY

Every two years, the Washington State Library and Washington Library Association join forces to ask how they can provide more relevant workshops, online trainings, and conferences to library staff in the state of Washington. Please take a few moments to provide your feedback by visiting www.surveymonkey.com/s/cena2013.

4) SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ARSL FALL CONFERENCE

The Washington State Library, thanks to funding from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), is making full scholarships available for rural and tribal library staff to attend the 2013 conference of the Association of Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL), which will be held from Wednesday, September 25 – Saturday, September 28, 2013, in Omaha, Nebraska. Scholarships will include all conference fees, transportation, and other expenses.

Eligible applicants must:

  • Work at a small and rural library (serving 10,000 or fewer), or in a tribal library in Washington State;
  • Be a first-time attendee at the ARSL conference;
  • Demonstrate a willingness to share knowledge gained from conference attendance with fellow library/district staff through a webinar, printed article, blog post, etc.;
  • Show how conference attendance will help to meet the library’s goals as they relate to the eight LSTA priorities (www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/LSTA-8);
  • Attach authorized (signed) permission to the application.

Deadline for applications: Friday, May 31, 2013. To apply, contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected], 360.570.5560, or toll-free at 1.866.538.4996.

5) CELEBRATE WASHINGTON POETS

Did you know that two of the greatest voices in the world of Washington poetry – Raymond Carver and Theodore Roethke – share the same birth date? Be a part of the tribute and consider participating in one or all of the following:

  • Hold a Raymond Carver-Theodore Roethke reading at your library during the month of May and/or June;
  • Come to the Raymond Carver Festival in Port Angeles, being held from Thursday, May 9 – Saturday, May 25, 2013 – find a schedule of events at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/CarverFestival;
  • Get together with friends and read works by the two poets – you can find everything you need for your reading by visiting www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/CarverRoethke;
  • Spread the word and let others know how they can join in the celebration.

If you need assistance or would like to share information about your reading, contact Alice Derry at [email protected].
