Following Thursday’s collapse of the Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River near Mount Vernon just before the Memorial Day weekend, our State Archives staff quickly found some classic photos of the bridge from Archives’ Washington State Department of Transportation collection. The top photo, taken in 1960, shows an aerial view of the bridge from the west. The middle photo is taken from the south. Note how little development there was near either end of the span back then. The bottom image, taken in 1967, features four views of the bridge.

  1. Why does the news report that the bridge was built in 1955? We all believe it was built in the 1960s….when I-5 was constructed. What’s your thoughts.

  2. The bridge was built in the mid-1950s as part of the rerouting of US99. US99 was renumbered to I-5 some years later. In the early 1970s, the bridge received a median barrier as part of a general upgrade of I-5 in that area.
