1) GREAT BOOKS GIVEAWAY COMPETITION
Each year, YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of ALA) receives approximately 1,200 newly published books, videos, CDs, and audiocassettes that have been targeted primarily towards young adults. These materials are submitted by publishers and producers for review and possible nomination by YALSA’s selection committees. After the ALA Midwinter Meeting (when committees select their annual lists), these materials need to be removed from the YALSA office to make room for the next year’s publications.
The YALSA Board of Directors believes many libraries that serve young adults would benefit from these materials. YALSA and the cooperating publishers are therefore offering one year’s worth of review materials as a contribution to a library in need through the YALSA Great Books Giveaway Competition.
For additional information and to apply, go to sos.wa.gov/q/GtBook. Questions? Contact YALSA at 1.800.545.2433, ext. 4387, or e-mail [email protected]. All applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, December 1, 2013.

2) NEED HELP WITH EASY READERS?
Easy Reader books can be confusing. How can you tell if a reader is for:
- A child just starting to read;
- Someone whose reading level is at the beginning of second grade;
- A reader who is somewhere in between?
At the next First Tuesdays on December 3, Youth Services librarians, Gwendolyn Hayley and Mary Ellen Braks, from Spokane County Library, will guide you through the confusing world of easy readers in Easy Readers Aren’t so Easy.
Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on December 3, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. Sessions are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit sos.wa.gov/q/tuesdays. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays.

3) AWARDS FOR YALSA MEMBERS
YALSA is currently accepting applications from its members for the following awards:
- The BWI/YALSA Collection Development Grant, providing $1000 for collection development to YALSA members who represent a public library and who work directly with young adults ages 12 to 18. Up to two grants are awarded each year. For more information, go to sos.wa.gov/q/BWIGrant;
- The MAE (Margaret A. Edwards) Award for Best Literature Program for Teens, honoring a YALSA member who has developed an outstanding reading or literature program for young adults. Winners receive $500 and an additional $500 for their libraries. For additional information, visit sos.wa.gov/q/MAE.
Applications for both awards are due by Sunday, December 1, 2013.

4) CONFERENCE SUPPORT FOR PLA MEMBERS
Public librarians who are new to the field can enhance their growth as professionals by attending major library conferences. The Demco New Leaders Travel Grant, presented by the Public Library Association (PLA) and Demco, has been established to enable PLA members who are new to the profession and who have not had the opportunity to attend a major PLA continuing education event in the last five years to do so. Eligible events include:
- PLA Results Boot Camp;
- PLA Conference;
- Other PLA events, such as pre-conferences or institutes, held in conjunction with the ALA Annual Conference or ALA Midwinter Meeting.
Up to $1,500 may be granted per applicant, depending on the proposed budget; the number of awards presented may vary, but no more than $5,000 will be distributed to all recipients in any one grant year. Grant recipients will receive a check in advance for the amount of their estimated budget request up to $1,500.
For additional information and to apply, visit sos.wa.gov/q/PLALeaders. Applications are due by 9:59 p.m. PST, Monday, December 2, 2013.

5) AWARDING INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY
Applications are now being accepted for the Public Library Association (PLA) Polaris Innovation in Technology John Iliff Award, which honors the life and accomplishments of John Iliff, early adopter and champion of technology in public libraries. The award is designed to encourage innovative user-oriented thinking and practical solutions using technologies old and new, providing a $1,000 honorarium and a plaque to recognize the contributions of a library worker, librarian, or library that has used technology and innovative thinking as a tool to improve services to public library users. There’s also a bouquet of roses for the awardee’s workplace to honor the environment that helped nurture the recipient’s innovation.
For additional information, visit ala.org/pla/awards/polaris. Applications must be received no later than 9:59 p.m. PST, Monday, December 2, 2013.
