If you plan to be a candidate for office this year and just can’t wait until June 6 to file, you can get a head start by filing via mail, starting this Friday. Mail-in candidate declarations are accepted from May 20 through Friday, June 10. It’s down to the wire!

Today is the last day for anyone wanting to file for an elected office in Washington.  As of 10:30 a.m. this morning, 179 people have either filed online or over the counter in the Secretary of State’s Office which doesn’t include filings done in the county auditor’s offices.  It’s worth mentioning that one candidate submitted petitions in lieu of paying the filing fee.  A candidate filing this way needs one signiture for every dollar it costs to file for a particular…

… that candidates filing for public office used to crowd the Secretary of State’s lobby?  The photograph below, taken in the late 50’s, depicts what filing week used to look like.   Most candidates were men, but a closer look towards the back of the picture reveals at least two women in the room.   This year candidate filing week is June 7-11, but the lobby won’t look anything like the picture.   Most candidates today file online instead of coming into the office.
