Big wins for WA libraries in the 2019 legislative session

The 2019 legislative session has ended, and thanks to the hard work of many people, libraries across Washington will benefit immensely. The Office of the Secretary of State, which oversees the Washington State Library, played a huge part in making that success a reality. There is so much good news to report! First, thanks to library advocates everywhere. Lawmakers included eleven rural libraries around the state in the capital budget. Each of these libraries will receive funds to improve their…

Understanding the February Special Election

Understanding the February Special Election

Did you know there’s an election coming up on Tuesday, February 13th? Springtime special elections sometimes get overlooked, especially when it feels like the recent November election is so fresh in mind. But in the February 2018 special election, 65 percent of Washington’s registered voters are eligible to participate — that’s 2,753,553 people. Voters from all but two counties have issues and/or races on the February ballot. San Juan and Skamania are the exceptions, but not all other counties have…

A Snapshot of Asotin County

A Snapshot of Asotin County

Asotin is second in a series covering Washington’s 39 counties, including how they got their names. Before the arrival…

A Newspaper Lost to History?

A Newspaper Lost to History?

From the desk of Steve Willis, Central Library Services Program Manager of the Washington State Library: The editor of the Clarkston Republic appears to be able to barely contain his gloating while reporting on the demise on a rival newspaper. I found this on page one, top of the fold, July 10, 1913:    CLARKSTON DAILY HERALD SUCCUMBS  Daily Paper Short Lived — Published Only Six Weeks. Cause Unexplained  “Last Saturday evening the Herald Publishing company suspended publication of the Clarkston…

When Asotin made national news

When Asotin made national news

Asotin is both the name of a small, lightly populated county in the southeastern corner of our state and its county seat. You don’t hear too much about Asotin these days. But that was not the case 80 years ago when a 12-year-old boy named Herbert Niccolls Jr. was convicted of first-degree murder for shooting and killing Asotin County Sheriff John Wormell (shown here on the left, photo courtesy of Washington State Archives) on August 5, 1931. The murder trial…
