1) MARKETING 101 – PR FOR NON-PROFESSIONALS

June’s First Tuesdays program, “Marketing 101: PR for Non-Professionals,” is aimed at library staff who find themselves doing the job of a PR professional. Two library Public Relations professionals, Beth Gillespie from the Spokane County Library District and Mary Kelly from Sno-Isle Libraries will share tips and tricks. They will discuss identifying and cultivating local media outlets and how to write a good press release.

June 1, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. To join the conversation, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/wimba. For more information on First Tuesdays, including archives of previous presentations, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays.

2) HOW VALUABLE IS YOUR LIBRARY?

Need to show the economic value of libraries to your city council? Have to prove to your local news media that the use of libraries is increasing? Want to know how people view libraries in order to plan for the future?

A variety of recent reports on perceptions of libraries, use of libraries, and economic value of libraries are available at the Renew Washington website. Go to www.sos.wa.gov/library/libraries/renewwashington.

If you have additional suggestions of reports to include, contact Karen Goettling, Washington State Library, [email protected], 360-570-5561.

4) WEBINAR EXPLORES BENEFITS OF PUBLIC INTERNET ACCESS

WebJunction presents a free webinar, “Opportunity for All: The American Public Benefits from Library Internet Access.” The University of Washington’s iSchool recently completed a nationwide study of public access computing in public libraries across the United States. The results of this study are available to all libraries and can provide a powerful supplement to locally collected data to show community impact from these services.

This webinar will explore some of the ways that data collected about public access computer use can demonstrate the value of your services in the community and provide valuable information about the needs of your constituents. It will examine approaches that have worked in using the data to influence funding and support for public access computing.

Tuesday, May 18, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. PDT. Register via this shortcut link: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/Opportunity.

5) REVISED STANDARDS FOR SERVICE TO YOUNG ADULTS

A 2010 revision of the “Standards for Public Library Service to Young Adults in Massachusetts,” originally created by a statewide committee of teen and children’s librarians, library directors and regional youth consultants in 1994, has been released by the Youth Services Section (YSS) of the Massachusetts Library Association. Intended to guide the local library in its ongoing evaluation and development of young adult services as a strong unit within the overall services and planning structure, additions to the 2010 version include chapters on:

  • Young Adult Librarians as Leaders and Long-Range Planning;
  • Technology as its own section with a subsection on social networking;
  • An extensive bibliography that will be available soon as a separate standalone web page that will be updated frequently as YSS members discover new, useful resources.

To download a copy of the 43-page PDF document, visit tinyurl.com/mla-yastandards. For more information, contact Maureen Ambrosino, Chair of the 2009-2010 Subcommittee on Young Adult Standards, at [email protected].
