1) FIRST TUESDAYS – SPOTLIGHT ON FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Under Washington law, board members of a Washington nonprofit organization, including public libraries, are responsible for the management of the business and affairs of the organization. In carrying out their responsibilities, the law imposes on board members the fiduciary duties of care, loyalty and obedience to the law. Discover what those duties are at next week’s First Tuesdays, where Lorri Ann Dunsmore of Perkins Coie will present The Fiduciary Duties of Nonprofit Board Members.

This free online webinar will take place on May 7, 2013, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays.

2) PUT SOME APPLES IN THE BASKET FOR WTBBL

Help the good work of the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library by participating this month in a free online fundraiser, the You Pick For Charity Game, sponsored by the Inland Northwest Community Foundation (INWCF). It’s simple to do. Go to www.inwcf.org/give/you-pick-for-charity-game. Then simply move all the apples on the tree into WTBBL’s basket. At the end of May, the charity with the most apples wins.

Factoid: WTBBL shipped about 85 tons of books by “free matter for the blind” mail in 2012 – roughly the weight of 4,000 bushels of Washington apples. Help to put at least 4,000 apples in the WTBBL basket between today and May 31!

3) SDL PROQUEST RENEWAL

The WSL Statewide Database Licensing Project (SDL) announces the 2013-2014 ProQuest renewal for all participating Washington libraries. Barring significant cancellations, pricing is not expected to change appreciably for the upcoming year.

For public, academic, and special libraries, the renewal is automatic. Invoicing from ProQuest will occur in June or July. For public or private K-12 libraries, renewal (or cancellation) is through your local ESD (Educational Service District).

If a library wishes to cancel its ProQuest subscription through the statewide contract, please fill out, sign, and return a Cancellation form by or before close of business on Friday, May 24. The cancellation form can be found on the SDL ProQuest renewal page: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/Renewal.

Information about the ProQuest database package can be found at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/PQ. For questions please contact project manager Will Stuivenga [email protected] 360.704.5217 or toll free 866.538.4996.
