1) NORTHWEST CENTRAL SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

Northwest Central (NWC) is a community-driven online clearinghouse for library-related continuing education opportunities serving library staff in Oregon, Washington, and beyond. As a free, community-oriented project, NWC depends on members in the library community to share calendar listings and information about library-related continuing education (CE) events.

NWC is currently looking for volunteers who can commit about one hour per week to search for CE opportunities and post them to the NWC web site. It’s a great way to build up a resume and to get involved in the library community. For additional information or to volunteer, contact Gina Bacon at [email protected] and/or visit nwcentral.org.

2) LOOKING FOR THE BEST SMALL LIBRARY IN AMERICA

Library Journal’s annual award for the Best Small Library in America, cosponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, honors the U.S. public library that most profoundly demonstrates outstanding service to populations of 25,000 or less. The winning library will receive:

  • A $20,000 cash award;
  • A feature story in the February 1, 2014 issue of Library Journal;
  • Membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the Public Library Association (PLA) Biannual Conference in 2014 in Indianapolis, IN;
  • A gala reception at the conference.

Two finalist libraries will be awarded $10,000 each, a special mention in Library Journal, and membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the PLA conference and gala reception in 2014.

For more information, visit sos.wa.gov/q/LJSmall. Nominations must be postmarked by Monday, October 14, 2013.

3) BECHTEL FELLOWSHIP FOR CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN

The ALA Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Special Collections and Bechtel Fellowship Committee are now accepting online applications for the 2014 Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship. The Fellowship provides a $4,000 grant to a qualified children’s librarian to spend a total of four weeks or more reading and studying at the Baldwin Library of the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida, Gainesville. The Baldwin Library contains a special collection of 85,000 volumes of children’s literature published mostly before 1950.

For more information about the Fellowship, visit sos.wa.gov/q/bechtel. Applications and supporting materials are due by Friday, October 18, 2013.

4) LIBRARIES TRANSFORMING COMMUNITIES

ALA’s The Promise of Libraries Transforming Communities is a groundbreaking libraries-as-change-agents initiative. ALA has partnered with the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation to provide librarians with the tools and training they need to lead community engagement and innovation. This project, made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), is the first step in building a sustainable, scalable national plan for library-led community engagement. To find out more about The Promise, go to sos.wa.gov/q/promise.

5) GOT TEENS? THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT

ALA’s Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has just launched an updated version of its free Teen Book Finder app to include all of the books the association honored in 2013. The first of its kind, Teen Book Finder gives teens, librarians, parents, and young adult literature aficionados access to YALSA’s recommended reading and award-winning titles from the past three years. The app enables users to search for books by title, author, award, year, or genre and can show users where to locate a book in a nearby library.

Teen Book Finder, available as a free download through iTunes, is currently compatible on the iPhone, iPod, or iPad, with an Android version in the works for 2014. YALSA plans for an update again in January, 2014, following ALA’s Midwinter Meeting and Youth Media Awards. For additional information and to download the app, go to sos.wa.gov/q/TeenBkFinder.
