2) THE FUTURE STEMS FROM READING GRANT CYCLE – APPLY NOW

The Washington State Library (WSL) wants to help school libraries update their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) collections. An advisory committee of teacher-librarians recommended 230 STEM book collections using lists of award-winning books aimed at elementary, middle, and high school students.

WSL is awarding 230 STEM book collections. Each collection has 50 awarding-winning STEM books, plus three professional titles for teachers. The collections, purchased from Follett, will be shelf ready, i.e. the books will have jackets and appropriate spine labels. The collections are materials from the 500 and 600 Dewey numbers. Most copyrights are post 2012. There are:

  • 120 elementary school collections
  • 55 middle school collections
  • 55 high school collections

The grants will be awarded via a one page application available here. All public and non-profit elementary and secondary schools in Washington are eligible to apply.

Application deadline: postmarked or hand delivered by 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2015.

3) EGGBOT ROBOTICS KIT NOW AVAILABLE FOR SIGN UP & CIRCULATION

The Washington State Library is accepting signups from public and tribal libraries for an EggBot Robotics kit. This STEAM device is a compact, easy to use, open-source art robot that can draw on spherical or egg-shaped objects. The EggBot kit contains materials to serve 8 to 20 children at one time depending on how it is deployed. The kit contains 5 laptops, 1 projector, and 5 EggBots. The kit is contained in two shipping cases. The spherical objects, such as ping pong balls, are NOT included in the kit. Each library will need to provide those.

Additional technical details can be discovered at http://egg-bot.com/.

WSL only has one EggBot kit, which we will begin shipping on November 9, 2015.

The circuit will work as follows:

  • One week is allowed for travel between libraries.
  • Then, the library will have the kit for three weeks before sending it on to the next library. One week is allotted for experimentation with the device to see what is possible. The remaining two weeks are intended for programming.
  • Longer times will be scheduled if an entire library system wishes to participate.

If you wish to sign up, please email [email protected]. Questions? Don’t hesitate to contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected] or 360-570-5560.

4) OPPORTUNITY TO HOST NATIVE VOICES TRAVELING EXHIBIT

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is proud to announce a partnership with the American Library Association (ALA) through which ALA’s Public Programs Office will manage a national tour of a traveling adaptation of Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness, to America’s libraries and other Native-serving cultural institutions beginning in 2016. Four copies of the traveling exhibition will tour nationally for four years to dozens of sites around the country.

There will be no cost to participating venues (except for a local insurance rider if needed). Applicants are asked to indicate why they wish to host the Native Voices traveling exhibition, include two proposed Native Voices-related activities or events, and provide 5 time frames that would work and 5 that would not.

The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday, November 6, 2015. For application details, please visit.

This hands-on class will highlight web resources tailored to the public health workforce, including health education, promotion, and research. Three asynchronous modules will be available online from October 28 to November 25, 2015.

“Health on the Range: Rural Health Issues and Resources” is worth 2 CE credits from the Medical Library Association.
